The integrity of the United Nations is increasingly under question, as its actions often seem to bolster authoritarian and corrupt interests rather than foster genuine, unbiased global cooperation. The disturbing trend spans recent crises: while the Secretary-General controversially met with Russian President Putin during a brutal war in Ukraine, the UN’s presence in Gaza has reportedly involved supplying resources that have ended up aiding militant groups. Such compromised actions risk rendering global institutions untrustworthy.

COP events, too, echo this troubling influence. When fossil fuel interests co-opt climate talks, these events risk becoming a front for greenwashing rather than a platform for transparent, actionable climate progress. It’s a chilling parallel to the plot of Don’t Look Up, where unchecked greed and corruption lead to the Earth’s destruction, all under a well-crafted guise of “goodwill.” We must recognize that without integrity and transparency, these conferences will continue to shield oligarchic and fossil fuel interests at the expense of real, sustainable change.
