COP28 is happening in Dubai right now; I'm sure you've seen it in the news. If you're wondering what it's all about, here's an insightful overview...
COP stands for Conference of Parties. It is the annual conference of the United Nations on climate change, and this year, the 28th meeting is happening in Dubai from November 28th to December 12th. At COP, world leaders, policymakers, scientists, and other stakeholders discuss climate change and its environmental effects and make critical decisions. The conference aims to address the current state of climate change and find solutions to mitigate its impact. The first COP meeting was held in Berlin, Germany in 1995.
At this year’s conference, world leaders will review the progress towards achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement 2015. The Paris Agreement is a landmark agreement that aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The conference will also focus on finding sustainable solutions to climate change.
How does this concern you? Well, here’s where you and I come in. As individuals and agents of change, we can take small steps towards reducing our carbon footprint. Take a moment to reflect on your daily routine to identify activities you can reduce, remove, increase, or include to help you make more sustainable choices. You can impact climate change by staying informed and engaged, educating others, supporting climate-friendly policies and businesses, and inspiring others to take action.
It's also essential to hold our leaders accountable and urge them to take actions that will protect our planet. While great reviews and decisions are being made at critical meetings like COP 28, it is crucial to ensure implementation and follow-up. By participating in governance at whatever level we can and voting for leaders who prioritise the environment, we can ensure that leadership is fully committed to the sustainability of our environment.
