Coordinating GE’s Efforts Toward Addressing Global Challenges at its First Chief Sustainability Officer

Innovating technology to lift up quality of life around the world—a core driver of sustainability—has been fundamental to how GE works since its inception 125 years ago. Sustainability priorities are woven into all that we do to innovate the technology to solve the pressing global challenges of the energy transition, precision health, and the future of flight. This is right for both business and the planet.

With humility in recognizing the importance of succeeding in our mission, I am honored that GE’s leadership has appointed me the company’s first Chief Sustainability Officer. In this role, I will coordinate efforts by our business leaders, engineers, and strategic thinkers to ensure we mitigate our impacts to our communities, people and planet in measurable and meaningful ways. And, important to GE, I also will support our efforts for our technology and innovation to address the pressing global challenges of providing sustainable, reliable, and affordable power, decarbonizing the power sector and addressing climate change, creating a healthier world by enabling broad and diverse access to precision health, and making air transport increasingly sustainable with smarter, more efficient technologies.

I'm passionate about GE's mission and approach this responsibility with the weight it warrants, but also with full optimism knowing more than 174,000 dedicated GE employees are united in succeeding globally. This is the ultimate team effort. Beyond GE, we will accelerate success by collaborating with and learning from government leaders, policy makers, NGOs, our investors, communities, and peers. We will approach our sustainability efforts with the same high expectations of rigor and accountability that we run our businesses, and use lean principles to continuously improve toward our goals. On a personal note, I would not be suited for this responsibility if it were not for all the hundreds of people who supported me from my first internship at the Justice Department’s Indian Resources Section to GE’s leaders and my colleagues who inspire me daily. Please know that I bring all of these experiences and learnings from you to work with me every day, and I appreciate you for that.
