The coolest solution ever invented.

Do you hire diverse candidates based on industry, or do you prefer hiring all from your same industry??

For example, as retail companies hire people who have worked in the retail domain, travel companies hire people from the travel domain. BFSI companies hire only from the Banking Finance domain??

When the technical skill could be upskilled, why not industry knowledge could be learned after joining in. In fact, a sector started developing further when they recruited people from other industries. Below are some of the ideas that were successful in one industry, and later, when some of those employees moved to different industries, other industries successfully adopted those processes.

  • Six Sigma originated in the manufacturing industry. Motorola developed it in the early 1980s, and it is followed in finance and telecommunications.
  • Lean principles originated in the manufacturing industry, specifically from the Toyota Production System (TPS) in the 1950s, and are widely used in construction and logistics.
  • The concept of a checklist originated in the aviation industry and has expanded its presence in healthcare.
  • Risk management originated primarily in the insurance sector and is adopted in the pharmaceutical and energy sectors.

Let us look at the story of Willis, who found an idea for one industry and later went on to use that idea in different industries.

In the early 20th century, the printing industry faced a significant challenge. Fluctuations in humidity affected paper dimensions, causing ink alignment issues and print quality.

An American engineer named Willis took up this challenge and embarked on a mission to develop a solution for regulating humidity levels to maintain consistent printing conditions.

Willis, when he was a child, he had difficulty grasping the concept of mathematical fractions. Realizing his struggles, his mother taught him by cutting whole apples into various-sized fractional pieces. He later said this lesson was the most important one he ever learned because it taught him the value of intelligent problem-solving.

After rigorous experimentation and innovative thinking, he solved the printing problem. He realized the solution is not to build something on the printing device or improvise ink features; instead, one needs to control the indoor environment.

Willis invented a combination of cooling coils and fans to control temperature and humidity effectively. The system precisely controlled the printing plant's environment, ensuring stable conditions for high-quality printing, and the CARRIER AIR CONDITIONING was born. Willis Carrier was named as the "Father of Air Conditioning."?

Recognizing the broader applications of his invention, Carrier realized similar problems could exist in other industries and explored its potential for different sectors, and it became an instant hit.

  • The entertainment industry used this in theatres, and it was an instant hit and contributed a lot to summer movie blockbusters as people came to cooled theatres to escape the heat.?
  • The aviation industry used it for their transatlantic flights ( one which flies over the Atlantic Ocean) to control the stagnant weather when flying over oceans.
  • The healthcare industry used it to safeguard patients from heat and cold for thermal comfort, lowering hospital mortality rates.

?Carrier invention transformed many industries and enhanced billions of people's lives worldwide.

Most of the problems are not new in this world - it's new to you, your organization, or your industry. Having diverse employees from different industries helps you overcome that, or at least the next time you encounter an issue, look for the same problem in another industry or country to learn how it was solved.?

Let us shape the world and create lasting change for the better.
