So?we have Great Resignation, quiet quitting, burnout, and more. Many companies are struggling to keep their people effective or to keep them at all.??Employee engagement is at an all-time low in most countries, with Europe's average of 14%. In the US, some 40% of workers plan to change their jobs, while productivity?has experienced the most significant drop in history.?https://www.fastcompany.com/90708347/the-future-of-work-is-forcing-an-evolution-in-leadership ?
It looks like the Human Element is the key. Despite the development of neuroscience, coaching, and various leadership approaches, we barely progressed as a society. Overwhelmed managers try to implement different techniques to no avail. As a leader of a fast-growing training company, I was dumbfounded myself - to the point that I got seriously sick. As a result of my upheaval, I started digging for solutions.
Do we understand what this is all about?
Why are people not motivated to work as they did before??
Seems we have some answers. Due to how most companies operate, people are stressed, overwhelmed, and tired. They are overwhelmed by corporate expectations. They want life-work balance, less hustle, and more time for their life.?
It is a systemic problem that looks like a passive-aggressive conflict between employers and employees. Both sides attempt to get their way with unsatisfactory results. The employers cajole and push, while the employees respond by cutting their hours and jumping jobs. Genuine collaboration and passion for work seem to disappear like last winter's snow in the global warming decade. Never before have organizations experienced something like this.
Throughout my leadership training and executive coaching career, spanning over 25 years, I have been preparing managers for this change. We taught older and younger leaders about VUCA, team dysfunctions, leadership styles, communication pitfalls, emotional intelligence, motivational drives, and other relevant topics. Now organizations need to procure even faster change in their leadership paradigm. What approach can work??
My experience points to Connected Leadership. Managers need to feel and understand their people. They need to develop strong trust and accountability for their teams quicker than ever before because the axe of quitting comes faster than ever before. When strong connection threads exist between managers and workers, all of the above is easier. Trust and responsibility hike up, and productivity increases.?
What exactly do I mean by?connected leadership??
It is an emotional and strategic bond between parties or between a person and an entity.?So?managers must strongly connect with their employees, team, and organization. This can be measured, and we have training methods and tools to monitor progress.?
Yet this is not enough; leaders must also be connected to themselves. To their personal values,?identity,?and?vision - these strategic elements must be aligned with the organization's values, vision, and strategy. If not, they will operate in a shallow limbo,?their drive will vane, and burnout will happen.?
To connect with themselves and others, executives need to intersperse their actions with periods of focused stillness, as described in the book?Stillness in Action?by?Caroline?Purkhardt.?Caroline?points out that connecting without pausing for at least two minutes does not work. One must recharge batteries and regain emotional grounding to be present with another. This is essential because effective connecting requires positive energy.
According to the book The?Power of Engagement, people operate cyclically. Periods of intensive activity must be?interspersed?with periods of rejuvenating rest. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of tasks, managers?try to short-cut this cyclical rule. Stressed and tired, they find no energy or inspiration to connect with others and themselves. The relationships spiral down into oblivion, and productivity falls. Nobody wants to work for an absent-minded, emotionally disconnected person who doesn't care for them.?

The methods of effective connecting and keeping connections do exist. The list starts with self-care, mindfulness, and coaching, yet the regular application of these methods is not enough. To change, one needs to start with at least one?profound experience?connecting them deeply with themselves and others, which will switch on their?connection awareness. Once they get this awareness, they will be much more likely to care for it and hone their skills to improve in this area.
What kind of profound experience is needed??
Our experience points to retreats where participants have a chance to get away from all distractions and spend quality time with themselves, followed by sharing and reflection time - best in a secluded natural setting led by experienced coaches using experiential learning methodology.?
Profound experiences are much less likely online or in the city's conference rooms.
Connection and depth are born out of stillness, presence, and deep listening.?
Once a person is connected or reconnected to that place of stillness, their ability to lead themselves increases, and so does their ability to influence others in a positive, productive way.?
No matter who you are and your position, you would greatly benefit from this approach. This type of leadership is a necessity for our times.?
