Cooking and 4 elements of transformation
Valentine’s day means love and good food for me?? and I love cooking, I am inspired by great theories and elements of delicious food and transformation elements in cooking, there is something great that draws us to that heart. It has to do with fact that we all have powerful memories of food prepared for us by our moms by our dads by our grandparents. It is act of generosity and love. It is still in the head for most of us and it is very powerful. ?
I lately read book COOKED from Michael Pollan, you can find also Netflix series.
He discovers the enduring power of the four classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth— to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink.
Each of these elements’ correspondents to one of the great transformations that we call cooking. Weirdly enough one of the biggest booms of cooking - it relieves us from the work of chewing, chewing and lot! ?This is like our vision to make products simples or stress free. Not having food in past and not able to connect to someone or not have money creates similar anxiety to people.
Primatologist from Harvard Richard Wrangham explains in his theory that it was cooking that led to our becoming human. He is essentially saying, that cooking is in our nature, it is baked into our biology at this point.
The cooking hypothesis is that humans are unlikely every other animal because we are biologically adapted eating our food cooked. If we think about human evolution, we can look on mounts and the jaws and the teeth’s and ask when they become relatively small and it was with home erectus. Brain was growing and it needs tremendous amount of energy.?Between increasing proportion of the food that is digested and allowing you to digest it with much less energy physical work. Cooking gives you more energy. Let’s introduce 4 transformation elements.
FIRE
We can start with fire cause that’s where cooking begins. We get hungry when we see food prepared on fire, there is something primal about that. If we lost our ability to have fire we would all die.?Fire is the medium that allows us to tell the story. Barbecue is ritual cooking of meat or vegetables – same across whole world. Circa 3-4 thousands new chemicals compounds are created when you cook meat, so it has more complexity and it means more flavor.
WATER
This is more complicated and advanced, cooking with water represents a very big technological advance cause you cannot cook with liquids until he have pots that can survive over fire.
AIR
Of the four elements air is most elusive, because we cannot see it, this makes it special. There is something very magical about it. One of the ways how we transform food is by getting air into it. Think of soufflé or bread, those foods are elevated by the fact that they now contain air. Bread is so simple food just 3 ingredients and air. Even if you are experienced cook, it is very intimidating.
EARTH
But of all the different transformation we call cooking, Fermentation is the most miraculous one and most mysterious one. ?And it is because it doesn’t involve any applied heat at all. This is food and drink made strictly through action of bacteria and fungi. Microbes most of which come from earth and they perform all the transformation and normally we need heat to make happen. We most likely didn’t realize how many fermented food we eat and have around us. (ketchup, sake, salami, beer or wine, all the way chocolate - 1/3 of foods are fermented and in the most cases, we don’t have idea about that.
Isn’t that theory great? 4 element which transform ingredients into delicious food.?How cooking is at the heart of our culture and that when it gets down to it, it also fundamentally shapes our lives.
How to apply It in our transformation?
Good theory helps us understand ‘how’ and ‘why.’ It helps us make sense of how the world works and predict the consequences of our decisions and our actions.?All cooking is transformation, and, in that sense, it is miraculous, it is alchemy. ?It is easier to understand something what is part of our lifes. So being able to control fire was key to the evolution of Homo sapiens; cooking, indeed, made us human.
Stress of not able to connect/ have data ?is similar. Making stress free telco services means deliver customer experience, which help clients to connect to loved ones, to build their business, to enjoy and dream bigger or to make their digital lives safer. When you think about invention of first radiocommunication it was pretty similar and powerful as preparing food on fire.??
Why digital transformation is not more than good cooking, there are also similar essential elements. How I see them, please feel disagree and drop comment bellow or reach me out directly. Goal is to provoke thinking ??
Digital transformation is not monolithical.?We can find 4 types of digital transformation: business process, business model, domain and cultural/organizational and they can nicely relate to cooking.
Fire - > Digital technology – all related to IT Domains like Enterprise Architecture, Security, cloud, integration, Software delivery etc. It is basic enabling element of Digital business.
Watter - > Business models and process, new technology enable new processes, simplification, digitization. It is about using value of technology for business purposes. ?
Air - >?Data - they are invisible, but making sense and giving great insights to decision makers or clients. You might have great product, but when will not provide right insight in right time. You will feel it and miss it as you miss fresh bread.
Earth - > Culture & Organizational Design, CX, UX, DX, EX. All those abbreviations are touching how we are organized to deliver customer experience.?There is same mystery like microbes are doing for food. It is Invisible network or interactions, decision, transferring beliefs, delivery pipeline from initial idea and insight to final piece of code?
Why it is that people now spend less time preparing food from scratch and more time reading about cooking or watching cookery programs on television? ?
What we need to learn from cooking to deliver so exciting and memorable customer experience???

1 年Fully agree, simplifying the customer experience, helping them to connect and bring meaningful value is the key. Especially when essential elements of connectivity such as speed, data volume and price are already becoming commodity. Creating significantly better UX/CX, relevant and simple offering, creating brand that matters may help differentiate.

1 年This one is easily imaginable and understandable ??. In my opinion, for a successful transformation, we need to eat less fast food. Because “fast sugars” fill us up in the short term, but they don't keep us healthy.

1 年Interesting look... Good food (digital transformation) means good cooks (people with an open mind). Tom de Marco in his book "Deadline" wrote something like "The most important thing is to choose the right people and let them work and the rest is minor administrative work" it works ....
