COO Community: Why Every Woman in the C Suite Needs Her People

Leadership Lessons From Seven Weeks in Spain

Spending seven weeks in Spain was not about escaping leadership—it was a reminder that even the most independent leaders need their people. Whether balancing deadlines with spontaneous moments of reflection or tackling challenges in a new environment, I learned that growth happens when you have both space to think and people to challenge and support you.

Lessons You Do Not See on Instagram

Yes, the views were stunning, but the reality? There were still goals to hit and decisions to make. Laundry to do (in a foreign language and a foreign appliance) and groceries to buy. Leadership is not about escaping the grind—it is about learning to thrive within it, whether you are leading from your office or adjusting to a different time zone. Spain reminded me that adaptability is a strength, and showing up with intention is what matters most.

The Mentors Who Keep You Grounded

No one reaches the C suite alone. Sandy Catour taught me that agency finance is about more than numbers—it is about building a foundation that sustains growth. Then there is Jane Cebrynski —the friend and business coach who challenges my thinking and pushes me to grow beyond my comfort zone. Even if tears made an appearance. Every COO needs people like Sandy and Jane—the ones who offer both expertise and honest feedback.

Finding Your People, No Matter the Distance

Through Agency Management Institute , I found that same connection with Carolyn Lodge , a fellow COO who I admire immensely. Our agencies may differ in size and focus, but we share the same mission: supporting the majority owners while leading our teams with purpose and passion. Carolyn has become more than a peer—she is a trusted collaborator, sounding board and friend. That is why I am excited she is joining me for my final week in Barcelona, where we will explore the city, share insights, and dive into our book club read, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins .

The Takeaway: Success Is a Team Effort

The biggest lesson from my time in Spain? Leadership is not about having all the answers—it is about having the right people beside you. Whether it is a mentor who guides you, a friend who holds you accountable, or a fellow COO who understands the weight of leadership, finding your people makes the journey more rewarding.
