In the next section, we will be exploring the technicalities behind conveyor systems.
Diving into the technical landscape
Since narrow high-speed belt conveyor systems will have the lowest initial cost, many are designed around this principle. The user of these systems is understandably overjoyed by the relatively low initial cost and low cost of replacing any of the components of the system.
However, there is a fundamental flaw in this principle. And, as more emphasis is placed on carbon footprint it would arguably be more prudent to design wide, slow-speed belt conveyor systems. For a given throughput requirement power to operate the system decreases if wider systems are used (Figure 01).
The cross-sectional area available for load carrying on a troughed belt conveyor system is shown in the graph below (Figure 02). It can be seen that for a standard belt conveyor conveying a generic ore having a 20-degree surcharge angle, there is not a linear relationship between width and capacity.
Percentage increase per 150 mm increase in belt width becomes greater. This is more obvious when the belt speed required to conveyor a given quantity per unit of time is plotted against belt width (Figure 03).
A new ultra-wide 4-bole calendar has recently been commissioned as part of an ongoing expansion and improvement programme taking place at Dunlop Industrial Products in Howick. This will ensure a wide accurate coating of belting fabrics at extremely high output speeds.
Also, for the first time at this, the oldest and original rubber product manufacturing facility, where steel cord conveyor belting is manufactured this ultra-modern calendar will allow the factory to produce the widest possible cover and bonder composite for use in the widest belt press in Southern Africa.
We manufacture a variety of specialised belts, such as steep incline, ‘pocket’ type belts. These would be an option whenever conventional conveyor systems require too much space, lack efficiency or are too expensive. With the current technical know-how, almost any conceivable conveying configuration from horizontal to vertical is possible.
