Converting FOMO to JOMO at work

Converting FOMO to JOMO at work

Fear of Missing Out is well documented.?It’s that nauseous feeling that overwhelms us when everyone else is getting promoted and a big raise.?It’s the anxious feeling when others are quitting and you wonder if life is better in that “other” company.?It’s the hatred that can boil up when all the cool people are going out for a beer on Friday and you are not invited. In general, FOMO at work is the anxious feeling that others are developing better careers and living better lives than you are. Get over it.?Appreciate what you have or, if you feel that way make changes.?Or, convert FOMO to JOMO.

JOMO is the Joy of Missing Out.?I take joy in never having to worry about going bungee jumping or waterfall kayaking this weekend.?Bring it closer to home…Take joy in missing the company picnic because you attended a wedding.?Take joy in moving from a manager into an individual contributor because you won’t have to do performance reviews.?Take joy in not eating the food in the breakroom.?Take joy in not having to enter a code to use the bathroom.?JOMO is about being present and content. You do not need to compare your career or work life to others.?When you free up that competitive and anxious space in your brain, you have much more time, energy and emotion to really achieve your goals.

?What’s on your JOMO list?

Replacing nightly work meetings with something a little more challenging - playing bar chords on the guitar with fingers that keep hitting bum notes. It might take a thousand attempts to get it right but when it does, it's a beautiful thing.

Embracing my JOMO more and more each day. I’m supporting the careers of others and leaning into the life I worked hard to achieve.
