The Ivans in the team get top billing for being "an issue to be addressed" in our team dynamics interventions.
Ivan - outgoing/people-oriented. Thrives on variety rather than being restricted to one activity for any length of time. Highly creative. Low tolerance for burdensome regulations that stifle innovation and deny opportunities to experiment.
Negative perceptions of Ivan among team leaders: Lack of focus. Easily distracted. Does not always follow instructions. Occasional home-run hitter. "If only I could harness his potential!"
KEYS TO MAXIMIZING RESULTS FROM YOUR IVAN
Here are 3 keys that will turn your Ivan into a regular star performer.
1. Channel Ivan’s gift for out-of-the-box thinking into more productive use by providing enabling systems and structures that are designed to facilitate creativity, not to stifle it.
For example, you could acquire supporting technology tools or teach Ivan how to use frameworks or problem solving and decisions making tools for greater efficiency.
2. Break deliverables into the smallest units possible. Avoid assigning projects with far off deadlines and limited options for ongoing monitoring. Ensure that there is built-in variety and that the assignments are engaging.
(Don't push back! If you want the results, create the environment that is most likely to produce them.
One constant that Ivans face is the thinking that they require special treatment. Well, every individual performs best in conditions that are ideal for them. Identifying and creating ideal conditions for team members will offer the pay back of outstanding team performance. Ask any successful sports coach!)
3. Build frequent review meetings into the performance management process. Simple reports alongside personal interaction are ideal. Complex, time consuming reports are merely an invitation to point another head-shaking finger at Ivan.
