Conversational UIs will bring a flurry of “micro” productivity

Conversational UIs will bring a flurry of “micro” productivity

I recently had a conversation with Noam Fine, co-founder and CEO, Hear.ai and something dawned on me.

I realised that generative AI might well be the missing link that I have been waiting for since 2017. When I started VUX World, it was in the days of Amazon Alexa. At the time, I really believed that Amazon Alexa was the computing paradigm of the future. Just being able to talk to something and have it understand you, and then be able to get stuff done on your behalf was an absolute dream.

The reality, was something different. Amazon Alexa didn’t understand 50% of what you asked of it and couldn’t execute even 10% of what you wanted it to. Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri were exactly the same (Siri still is).

But the promise always remained. Talking is faster than typing and being able to just speak at something that can hear you from wherever you are, severely reduces the friction involved in pulling out your phone, unlocking it and merrily trying to find something yourself.

We are not there yet in terms of voice assistants, but we’re beginning to get there with conversational interfaces in software programs that you use every day.

It’s my prediction that all of the applications that you rely on, on a daily basis, will become conversational very soon. Everything from your CRM, HR systems, stock management, CMS, finance systems, you name it. As conversational interfaces begin to proliferate across these types of assistance, the marginal gains that you will see in productivity and reduction in friction will usher in a new era of what I call micro productivity. Small moments that can be saved on typical tasks throughout the day that when accumulated had to a significant jump in productivity.

In my latest Substack article, I explore this theme in detail, with references and examples of previous attempts at creating this dream-like conversational user interface. I explore the real challenges and barriers that we’ve seen that have prevented this from hitting the mainstream so far. I’ll give you some examples of what contemporary conversational user interfaces look like, and how this could pave of the way for an era of micro productivity in your business.

It will certainly be interesting to see how we interact change! I believe we will move towards multi-interaction based as there are times conversational won't be appropriate or efficient.

I tend to agree Kane - I can see a future where CUIs are used more and more. I have a lot of positive experiences such as dictating instead of typing (when I remember) even on my windows laptop. I just haven't formed the habit yet. This works really well in the quite calm of my home office. I do have concerns about less private spaces - can't work in offices, on transport where the additional 'noise' cold be an issue, not to mention the privacy question. Do you think these barriers can be overcome? or is voice mainly for private spaces?

100% agree. The UI folks aren't ready or aware of what's coming.
