As part of new series of interviews with the Ninety One Technology team, we recently spoke with Lucia Pino-Garcia about her role at Ninety One, what inspires her, the importance of diversity and her outlook for the future of technology.?

1.???What inspires you at Ninety One/Why did you join Ninety One?

The thing that attracted me most to Ninety One from the beginning was the passion for the business and for doing the right thing for our clients. This business has been built from the ground up by and for people who believe firmly in investing for a better world. The entrepreneurial nature of our founder is clearly part of the culture and given our size every person can make a difference to our business’ success.

2.???What made you want to get into Technology?

As a child I loved solving puzzles and logic problems. When I got my first computer I realised that I could solve bigger problems faster and I fell in love with Technology.

3.???What’s the best thing working in the Ninety One Technology Team?

Everybody has a voice and a real opportunity to make a difference. I’m so excited about the engagement and proud of our culture of continuous learning and improvement.

4.???How do you see the future of Technology evolving?

Technology is part of everything we do, not a department within the company. The companies that will survive and thrive need to have that technology mindset at the heart of the business.

5.???How has your career changed at Ninety One?

Being the CTO at Ninety One has provided me with the opportunity to get involved with asset management end to end. The complexity and ambition of our business is exciting and offers opportunities for us all.

6.???How would you encourage diversity in Technology?

If technology is going to help resolve problems in our world, everybody needs to be involved and have a voice. We need diversity of thought coming from all parts of our world. We should be open to address the reality of privileges and prejudices and have an open dialogue. There is a strong stereotype about technical people that decreases the universe of possibilities. We should all push against stereotypes and biases and call them out when we see them, as well as acknowledge with humility when we are prejudiced and somebody calls it out.

7.???Why did you join Ninety One InIT?

Our InIT (Inclusion in IT) initiative has been driven from people across our teams, everybody contributed to the dialogue and the opportunity to not only grow our skills internally but also contribute externally in our communities. It was great to see the passion across our organisation to make this a reality.?

A real thought provoking interview, Tarun. It’s great to see that Technology, in the main, is now no longer perceived as a business-blocker stuck in the basement but a business-enabler fully equipped to provide the best strategic soluton.
