A Conversation with Planet Earth, 2023 Edition

Each year I have the amazing opportunity to check in with the home planet and gain some wisdom.

Me: Hi Earth, I am back for our yearly conversation

Earth: It’s good to see you again

Me: Earth, I need your help

Earth: Okay, what’s wrong?

Me: Well, I’ve been working on sustainability for 25 years, and I haven’t seen the ecological revolution I thought I would see.

Earth: Humans have gotten better, not much, but better. People like you are always around, always nipping at the edges of change, but never getting to the core of the problem.

Me: Are you saying I wasted my time?

Earth: To the contrary, it’s people like you who offer a counter to rampant disaster capitalism. In other words, if environmentalists were not doing the work, I would be in much worse shape than I am today. So, thanks for all that you do.

Me: Thanks for that earth, I feel a bit better, but we can’t seem to cut to the core of the basic human paradigm of self-interested disaster capitalism. Our need to colonize, grow at all costs, plunder any last remining raw resources from you is endless. No matter what, humanity continues its predictable march to the end.

Earth: You need to lighten up. There is no “end” as you describe it. It is just a transition from one world view to another, a step over the threshold into a new reality and a new relationship with me.

Me: That’s sounds amazing. What will it look like?

Earth: It will be great! I see several changes in the new world view:

1.?????You will have kinship with me. We will work together once again to move forward into a glorious period of co-evolution

2.?????You will start living a regenerative lifestyle

3.?????You will become multi-dimensional thinkers, able to see the world through multiple lenses at the same time. You will stop seeing the world as a dialectic but a multi-layered ambiguous set of truths. This will allow you to move beyond hate.

Me: this sounds great! Why can’t we start now?

Earth: Well, you have already started. Everyone working on sustainability is building the platform for a new regenerative future. Keep going. Don’t stop. Work quicker. but make sure to take some time to enjoy the present moment.

Me: Thanks earth. I forget that. I am so worried about the future. I forget to connect with the people around me and enjoy the moment.
