The Conversation That Needs to Be Had | Episode 66

In episode 66 of Don't Eat POOP! A Food Safety Podcast , Matt Regusci and I are talking conferences.

I recently attended the Food Safety Summit and the National Restaurant Association Show and I’m taking this opportunity to update Matt and our audience on what went down.

Prepare yourself for 2 very different events, some important discussions, and of course, some great anecdotes that will remind you of the importance of food safety, especially in big events like these.

In this episode:

  • [03:22] The differences between the? Food Safety Summit and the NRA Show
  • [11:36] Don’t forget that others may not know what you know so well
  • [16:01] The Women in Food Safety Group, sexual harassment, and racism
  • [25:36] Blowing into single-use gloves is not a good idea
  • [28:26] Food Safety at the NRA Show
  • [30:53] Interviewing at the Food Safety Consortium

What We Often Forget

At the conferences I attended recently I was reminded of something really important:?

We forget that what’s old news to us may actually be the first time someone else comes into contact with that same information.

For example, we walk every day and it’s par for the course but for a baby, each step they take is cause for celebration.

Like me, you might be talking about and writing about different aspects of food safety culture every day, but there are still people who don’t know that food safety culture is more than just the checklist, the environmental testing, and the quality inspections.

The problem is that we’re surrounded by it every day and quickly grow tired or saturated with the content we’re creating or the conversations that we’re having because “I feel like I said this 1,000 times already”.?

What we have to understand is that:

  1. There are way more than 1,000 people that need to hear this.
  2. People need to come into contact with the same information a few (or a lot, really) times in order to buy into a new idea or concept that will change how they operate.

The Conversation That Needs to Be Had

This means that the conversation that needs to be had is the conversation that we’re already having.?

We need to continue to talk about food safety, its culture, its practices, and its importance because that and only that will make a difference and help save lives.

Consider this your reminder to not falter and keep talking, the world needs it!
