What is your current role at Radical Departures?
I am a Senior Medical Writer.
How did you get involved in medical communications?
Nearing the end of my undergraduate degree I knew that I wanted to pursue a life science-focused career but had decided that laboratory and clinical work wasn’t for me. I set about applying for a whole range of different jobs, and at the time I had no idea what medical communications even was. I stumbled upon an advert for a junior position at Radical Departures while searching for science-related roles and that’s where I discovered the industry. After progressing through recruitment stages and learning more about the field of work I realised the position was a good fit for me – I took the job and haven’t looked back since. Starting out, I worked on a mixture of account management and medical writing tasks but after a couple of years I decided to pursue the writing side of things. I switched to writing full time, with the new title of Medical Writer and I’ve been doing that ever since.

Favourite aspect of your role?
The thing I enjoy most about my job is that I learn something new every day. A big part of the role is researching diseases and therapy areas before starting new projects and this gives me the chance to learn a lot about life science and medicine.
Most challenging aspect of your role?
Being able to quickly understand complex therapy areas can sometimes feel like a challenge, especially when dealing with topics that I’ve not been exposed to before. Although as previously mentioned, this is also an enjoyable aspect of the role and it’s something I’m good at navigating.
Favourite part of working at Radical Departures?
Quite simply, the people. It’s a genuine pleasure to work with everyone at Radical, which is something I feel lucky to be able to say. There’s a really strong sense of team between us, underpinning a great working culture that we’re all proud of.
