A Conversation With Justine Tice

Over the next few weeks, we will share interviews with three District Managers who recently received our Excellence Award, formerly known as the REACH! Award. The award celebrates our top performing Retail associates for their exemplary leadership throughout the year. This week, we sat down with Justine Tice, District Manager, to hear more about her career.
J.Jill: Tell us about what you do here at J.Jill and what a typical day in your life looks like?
Justine: As a District Manager for J.Jill, I oversee stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. I’ve been with the company for over 14 years, and with 20 locations across 3 states, traveling is certainly a major element of the job. Store visits, however, are the most exciting part of my role. While visiting these locations, not only am I responsible for ensuring proper store execution and delivery of desired results, but I also listen to what our store leaders, associates and customers communicate. My role is often to be a sounding board for ideas, feedback, or business obstacles so I can guide, support, educate and inspire my teams. It’s also exciting to work with so many different people, personalities and skill sets.
J.Jill: Wow! 14 years is a long time. What do you love most about working here?

Justine: I love J.Jill’s uniqueness, both in product and culture. At J.Jill, we take a thoughtful approach. We aren’t a brand that makes hasteful decisions, instead, we put the customer’s experience at the center of our focus. I’ve also found the company to be caring – always looking to support our associates and the communities that we serve.
J.Jill: Looking back at your career, how have you grown professionally since joining J.Jill? ?
Justine: Over the course of my time here, I have had the opportunity to work with many experienced retail leaders who have mentored me to grow personally and professionally. Some of the key skills that I have developed while at J.Jill include how to articulate my vision, network more effectively, build successful teams, and ?become more solution oriented.
J.Jill: Those are incredibly valuable skills. What advice would you offer someone interested in joining J.Jill or following a similar career path?
Justine: If you are going to enjoy working in retail, you need to love people. No other career will afford you the opportunity to build so many relationships, both personally and professionally. I always advise fellow team members starting their career to find a great mentor. I still look back on the people who mentored me at different phases of my career and remain grateful for the skills they helped me hone and the relationships I was able to build.
