At Vicarious Surgical, we value the impactful work our female engineers have brought to the development of our next-generation surgical robotic solution. We spoke with several of our female engineers to discuss their career paths, what a typical day looks like in their position, and their best advice for aspiring female engineering professionals. Read on to learn more about these four inspiring employees.

On Choosing Engineering?

Many of our female engineers developed an interest in the field at a young age. Erin Bitner, manager of advanced manufacturing engineering, said, “I always loved working with my hands, making things, and helping my dad in the garage. I attended a high school STEM program for girls where I had the opportunity to hear about women in STEM jobs. This is where I discovered the job of my dreams was titled ‘engineer.’ I have been hooked ever since.”??

Sapna Kaiya, senior manager of the software robotics test team, said, “I would like to believe that engineering chose me!” She said, “Math and science were my favorite subjects in school, and I was quite keen to become a doctor. I had applied to a few medical schools in the area but did not get into the school of my choice. As I explored other options and did some self-reflection, I recalled the times when one of my favorite activities was taking things apart and rebuilding them back again. It made me realize that I had a stronger aptitude for engineering. I decided to switch gears and applied to engineering colleges. I would like to believe that my life has come full circle, as I now work on engineering medical devices!”??

On Advice for Young Women Looking to Pursue a Career in Engineering?

Sophia Atik, human factors engineer, said, “Be confident in yourself and your ability to do the work in your own way. Hone your personal craft and always be willing to learn and accept feedback from others.” Erin Bitner expanded on that statement and said, “Focus on what brings you joy and chase that. Do not worry about what others think or what standards you need to hold yourself to. You will do great.”?

Saloni Mehta, senior project manager, said, “Never let any bias get in the way of your success. You are stronger and smarter than you think you are. Do not change yourself and never lose your inherent attributes as a woman – be kind, and empathetic, and do not be afraid to express your emotions. You can become anything you set your mind to.”?

Sapna Kaiya discussed the expansion of the engineering industry with roles that benefit from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. She said, “The rigor of engineering prepares you in many ways and more importantly gives you a framework to creatively solve any complex problems. With the expansion of the industry, many new roles have been created so there is a constant need for people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. My advice is to do your research, find your tribe, and do not be afraid to dive in!”??
