A Conversation with Ellen, From a Childhood Fascination to Blazing Trails in Scientific Sales

BPES: Welcome, Ellen! We're thrilled to explore your inspiring journey from the realms of academic research to the vibrant world of sales. Can we start by discussing the roots of your passion for science? Was there someone or something that particularly sparked your interest in this field?

Ellen: Absolutely, my passion for science was ignited by my Dad, a biologist and environmental scientist. My first brush with a laboratory was through his work. When he had to attend his lab on weekends to monitor experiments, I would always join him. My fascination with his work and the environment he worked in was magnetic. Science was the only future I envisioned for myself. My Dad's support during my PhD and his ongoing interest in our activities at BPES have been an unwavering source of strength and motivation for me.

BPES: Intriguing! Let’s delve a bit deeper into your academic journey. Could you share a pivotal moment from your PhD days in the USA that shaped your career trajectory?

Ellen: Certainly! A defining moment was during a student-led event, ‘Science Crossroads’ that I was part of during my PhD. This event revealed the myriad possibilities science had to offer. One speaker, thriving in scientific sales, spoke of her path, and it echoed with my aspirations. That interaction defined my resolve to venture into scientific sales.

BPES: Moving from academic research in the USA to a sales role in the UK is quite the transition. What were the major triumphs and hurdles along the way?

Ellen: True, it was a monumental shift. Apart from navigating logistics, building a new professional network and overcoming the initial lack of sales experience were significant challenges. It necessitated a brief segue into a recruitment specialist role, allowing me to blend my scientific background with newfound sales acumen.

BPES: It sounds like a journey filled with learning and adaptation. Were there mentors or peers who left a lasting impact on your career?

Ellen: My mentor during my PhD, Chris Geyer, was invaluable, extending his support and connections in the UK, and continually reminding me of his availability whenever I needed guidance or support.

BPES: Your role as a Technical Sales Specialist at BPES must have been a concoction of experiences and interactions. Can you share a moment that encapsulates the essence of your passion for your work?

Ellen: Yes, the essence of my role is mirrored in interactions with our customers, who value the sincerity and support BPES extends beyond mere sales. This reinforces my conviction in being part of a company that prioritises genuine help and support for its customers.

BPES: In a constantly evolving biotech landscape, how do you keep your knowledge and insights razor-sharp?

Ellen: Staying informed is imperative. I follow several influential accounts on LinkedIn, like Cell & Gene and The Institute of Cancer Research and I keep an eye on our customers' progress and achievements to stay abreast of developments in the scientific community.

BPES: Ellen, thank you for sharing your enriching journey and invaluable insights with us. It’s been enlightening!

Ellen: Thank you for having me! If my journey can inspire or resonate with others, it would be a delightful accomplishment!
