A Conversation in Cincinnati about Healing Trauma
Phyllis Jeffers-Coly
Author of We Got Soul; We Can Heal: Overcoming Racial Trauma Through Leadership, Community and Resilience
Last Monday in Cincinnati, I had the opportunity to be in such a loving, honest and open conversation with my brothers Philip Alexander Cunningham, MBA and Tim Barr Jr. in a space with so many folks who truly support and understand what we do and why. We offered our experience and expertise about how Black folks might heal and respond to loss, grief and trauma, particularly race-based stress and trauma. We know clearly that the work that must be done is communal and collective in nature. That we must consistently challenge the systemic ways that we experience ongoing, cumulative and recurring race-based and trauma. And, that our capacity to love Black people and to be open, curious and vulnerable are part of that work.
I was honored and humbled to be able to share the work that Eddy Coly and I do through Diasporic Soul. With folks who understand how SOUL contributes to our healing and restoration and our capacity to be well. How creating institutions and offering resources like Jamaa Health and Diasporic Soul are tied to our healing and restoration as well as our resistance and liberation.
Thanks Urban Consulate for offering Urban Consulate: Where Can We Heal Trauma in Our Communities? and giving me the chance to join you a second time to talk about the healing and restoration of Black people.
