Conversation with Alex Amparo, Assistant Administrator of National Preparedness at FEMA

We are happy to make available an important "fireside chat" I had at the?AWARN Summit?with?Alex Amparo, Assistant Administrator of National Preparedness at FEMA. Alex has been a very busy man with the unprecedented rise in floods and wildfires driven by climate change. His comments provide important insights into the future of alerting as natural disasters increase in frequency and severity.

Mr. Amparo leads an organization of more than 1400 employees across four major and three minor components that include the Federal Insurance & Mitigation Administration, National Preparedness Directorate, Grant Programs Directorate, National Continuity Programs, Office of Counterterrorism and Security Preparedness, Office of Resilience Integration and Coordination, and Resilience Enterprise Operations.

The goal of the AWARN Alliance is the development of voluntary agreements between local emergency managers and TV stations to use?Next Generation Television?(ATSC 3.0)?to improve disaster resilience. The AWARN Summit laid the groundwork for local roundtable discussions between emergency managers and local TV stations. We hope these model agreements will create a roadmap for a national roll out and creation of a "network of networks" for public alerting and warning.
