A Conversation with AI on Artificial Intelligence - Wow!!!

A Conversation with AI on Artificial Intelligence - Wow!!!

When anything new comes out that I can get a chance to play with, I do. So when the opportunity to play with Artificial Intelligence came along, I jumped all over it. Check it out by visiting chat.openai.com

I began with a variety of inquiries, along with learning how AI was matching up against humans. It was impressive, yet scary. As an adjunct professor, I began to consider the implications related to course exams and papers. I typed in the Discussion Board Post that I had assigned for this week to see what type of response I would get. I was blown away. It was superior to what I could have done, even as a subject-matter-expert on the topic. Intrigued with the speed and quality of the response I made further inquiries to ChatGPT related to its use in education.

INQUIRY to ChatGPT: "Do your responses ever include any plagiarism?"

ChatGPT Response:

As an AI language model, I do not plagiarize content. All of my responses are generated based on the patterns and information I have been trained on. I don't have direct access to the internet or specific published works, so I cannot copy or reproduce content verbatim. However, it's important to note that while I strive to provide accurate and reliable information, there is always a possibility of generating responses that may resemble existing material. If you ever come across a response that seems plagiarized or raises concerns, please let me know, and I'll do my best to address it.

What does this mean for education today? We use papers and posts as a means to measure student progress and grade students. What if students used AI to generate their papers and posts? Is this a form of cheating? plagiarism meaning using the AI response without citing it? Well let's ask AI...

INQUIRY to ChatGPT: "What are the implications of using AI for college students writing papers?"

ChatGPT Response:

The use of AI for college students writing papers can have both positive and negative implications. Here are some of the key considerations:

  1. Efficiency and Productivity: AI tools can help students become more efficient and productive in their writing process. AI-based writing assistants can provide grammar and spelling suggestions, improve sentence structure, offer vocabulary alternatives, and even provide feedback on the overall coherence and clarity of the content. This can save students time and effort in the revision and editing stages of their papers.
  2. Learning and Skill Development: While AI tools can provide valuable assistance, there is a risk that students may overly rely on them and miss out on opportunities for learning and skill development. Writing is a crucial skill that college students should cultivate, and relying too heavily on AI may hinder their ability to improve their writing proficiency independently.
  3. Plagiarism and Academic Integrity: One of the major concerns with using AI tools for writing papers is the potential for plagiarism. AI-generated content or excessive reliance on AI-generated suggestions without proper citation can lead to unintentional plagiarism. Students must understand how to ethically use AI tools, ensuring they appropriately attribute ideas and content to their original sources.
  4. Originality and Creativity: AI tools may offer suggestions and templates that can stifle originality and creativity in writing. While AI can be helpful in improving technical aspects of writing, students must still strive to express their unique ideas, perspectives, and creativity in their papers.
  5. Bias and Accuracy: AI algorithms are trained on large datasets, which may contain inherent biases. This can potentially influence the suggestions or feedback provided by AI tools. Students must critically evaluate and fact-check the suggestions they receive to ensure accuracy and avoid propagating any biases.
  6. Support for Non-Native English Speakers: AI tools can be particularly beneficial for non-native English speakers, as they can provide assistance in grammar, vocabulary, and overall language usage. These tools can help enhance the quality of their written work and improve language skills over time.

In summary, the use of AI tools for writing papers by college students can enhance efficiency, provide learning opportunities, and offer support to non-native English speakers. However, students should be cautious about overreliance, potential plagiarism risks, impacts on originality and creativity, biases in AI suggestions, and the importance of maintaining academic integrity. It is crucial for students to strike a balance between utilizing AI assistance and actively developing their writing skills.

Wow! Quite impressive once again (note that I made no modifications to the response). It covered my concerns and also provided some benefits, helping me to challenge my own bias. This is something that academia will need to address, along with society and humanity. I was beginning to see the potential of AI. Imagine having access to all recorded knowledge along with the ability to assimilate this into very well written response within seconds.

I started to think broader, considering implications AI would have on all of humanity, which was another question I posed to this "expert".

INQUIRY to ChatGPT: "What are the implications of artificial intelligence on humanity for the next 50 years?"

Link to CHATGPT Response so that you can see it in the original form. Below is a copy of this response.

Predicting the exact implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on humanity over the next 50 years is challenging, as it involves a certain level of speculation. However, based on current trends and potential developments, here are some potential implications:

  1. Automation of jobs: AI and automation technologies have the potential to significantly impact the job market. Many routine and repetitive tasks could be automated, leading to job displacement in certain industries. However, new job opportunities may also emerge as AI creates new roles and enhances productivity in various sectors.
  2. Economic impact: The automation of jobs could lead to economic inequality if certain groups are disproportionately affected. It will be crucial to address potential societal and economic implications and implement policies to ensure a fair distribution of resources and opportunities.
  3. Healthcare advancements: AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving diagnostics, drug discovery, and personalized medicine. AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of medical data to identify patterns, make predictions, and assist healthcare professionals in decision-making, ultimately leading to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment outcomes.
  4. Ethical considerations: As AI becomes more advanced, ethical considerations surrounding its use become increasingly important. Issues such as privacy, algorithmic bias, and transparency need to be carefully addressed to ensure the responsible and fair deployment of AI technologies.
  5. Human-AI collaboration: Rather than replacing humans, AI could augment human capabilities and enable new forms of collaboration. Humans and AI systems may work together in various fields, including research, creativity, and problem-solving. This collaboration has the potential to enhance human productivity and enable breakthrough discoveries.
  6. AI governance and regulation: With the increasing influence of AI, regulations and frameworks for governing its development, deployment, and use will become crucial. International cooperation and ethical guidelines will be necessary to ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.
  7. Impact on education and re-skilling: The rise of AI may require individuals to adapt and acquire new skills to remain relevant in the job market. Educational systems will need to adapt to teach AI-related skills and emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence, which are areas where humans excel over machines.
  8. Enhanced decision-making: AI has the potential to improve decision-making in various domains, such as finance, transportation, and governance. However, careful consideration needs to be given to ensure that AI systems are transparent, explainable, and free from biases, ensuring that humans can trust and understand their decisions.
  9. Technological advancements: AI will likely continue to advance, leading to the development of more sophisticated algorithms, increased computing power, and new applications. Breakthroughs in areas such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing could significantly impact various industries and society as a whole.

It's important to note that these implications are speculative and based on current trends. The actual impact of AI on humanity over the next 50 years will depend on a multitude of factors, including technological breakthroughs, societal decisions, and the ethical choices we make along the way.

Chills grasped my body. I was overwhelmed with the immediate response and the breadth of what it covered, along with its simplicity and brevity. I read the response several times which made me reflect and consider elements I would not have thought about initially.

My philosophical nature demanded more, so I asked some pretty deep and profound questions. Below is the link to the response to this question, "What is your prediction relating to the good, bad, and the ugly relating to the evolution of humanity over the next decade?" Link to response.

My own conclusion: AI will bring significant change to humanity. As with any change, there is the consideration of good vs. evil. But rather than forming my own judgement and opinions, I used AI to educate me first, along with the conclusion that AI is here and will be a force to contend with. It is up to humanity to determine the power we will give this tool, and its overall application. I would STRONGLY suggest that you get acquainted with AI so that you can at least be prepared for its entrance and early applications. I am truly excited and scared.

Exciting indeed. My experience exploring Chatgpt initially felt like a child with a new toy and before I knew, I was deep diving into each response I got from it. It was liberating because I could ask it anything without feeling judged and it came up with impressive responses. I specifically like that it can rewrite, summarise and explain itself in simple language. Though I did encounter some information which was incorrect and when I pointed the same, it graciously accepted!! I feel I have found a mentor who I can go to ask questions and bounce off my ideas with. Yes it may not be as emotionally intelligent but my experience feels it’s pretty good given the data it has about human behaviour
