The Convergence of Streaming and The Metaverse
Over the past couple of years, I have been asked by a number of media and tech leaders and analysts, how I see Streaming and the Metaverse converging.??I have identified 5 key areas of interest and focus at the intersection of Entertainment and Web3D.??In no particular order they are;
Immersion and Interaction: One of the key characteristics of the metaverse is that it promises highly immersive and interactive experiences. For OTT and video streaming platforms, this will likely mean integration of features that allow users to not only passively consume content, but also interact with it and with other viewers.?For example, Twitch's chat feature allows viewers to interact in real-time while watching a stream, and this could be taken to the next level in a metaverse meeting or watch-party environment.
Content Personalization: AI-powered algorithms for content recommendations have already become commonplace in OTT platforms. However, the metaverse could push this further by allowing users to have more control over their viewing experiences. This could include choosing different viewing angles, participating in the storyline, or even creating their own content in a metaverse environment.
Cross-Platform Integration: The metaverse is often described as an interconnected universe of digital spaces. This implies that OTT and video streaming platforms could become more integrated with other platforms, such as social media, gaming, and even e-commerce. For example, a user could watch a movie on a streaming platform, discuss it with friends on a social media platform, and buy merchandise related to the movie on an e-commerce platform, all without leaving the metaverse.

AR/VR and 3D Experiences: With advancements in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), OTT platforms can provide 3D and 360-degree viewing experiences. This could dramatically enhance user engagement, making content consumption more immersive and interactive.
Metaverse Exclusive Content: Just as platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have been producing their own exclusive content, we may see metaverse-exclusive content. This could involve shows and movies that are designed specifically for the metaverse environment and make full use of its immersive and interactive features.
New Revenue Models: The metaverse could open up new revenue models for OTT and video streaming platforms. This could include things like selling virtual goods or experiences, charging for premium interactive features, or even creating a virtual economy where users can earn and spend digital currency.

1 年Fantastic post, Darcy. As we saw with Disney and Apple, the intersection of streaming and the metaverse is an important opportunity for brands to pounce on. This is just one of the great ways Metaverse can revolutionize entertainment.
