Much of the conventional job search advice given to age 40+ job seekers isn't so wise ...
This is guidance that's regularly given by friends/family/mentors, outplacement, most career coaches/authors, used by certified professional resume writers, high volume resume "mills", and job board resume services.
While these recommendations sound good on their face, it fails when put into practice. In fact, most of the time these tips cause you to lose opportunities when you're qualified.
Job seekers use it because they've heard that this is good advice over and over - It's been pounded into your head, so you think "this must work".
Here's an example of advice that is given to most age 40+ job seekers, but almost always fails:
Specific Exclusion: Age 40+ job seekers are regularly given advice to exclude specific information. This typically includes jobs early in their career, dates of those positions, and graduation dates. You've probably been given this wisdom also - Maybe you've been told that it's too early in your career, that employers don't care about it, or that it can get you screened out by ATSs (that search for dates prior to a target, as a proxy for age).
But you don't see why this advice causes you to lose opportunities, because employers use many evaluation methods to catch candidates who hide information.
While ATSs can be used to screen out dates prior to a target, doing so violates Federal employment non-discrimination laws, so not many employers use this obviously illegal tactic. However, some recruiters/HR reps will do what's called a "null search" to screen out resumes that exclude data where it's expected ... like dates.
If your target employer doesn't screen by null search and you get through the ATS, by the time your reader gets to education and early career (at the end of your resume), if you still have their attention they're reading every word in detail. It catches your readers' eye when you exclude dates, making your reader think "what are you hiding?". Part of a recruiter's/HR rep's job is to screen out undesirable candidates (things like theft, fraud, jail time) who try to hide their poor decisions by excluding jobs, creating time gaps, and hiding it by excluding dates - Just like what you're doing when trying to hide your age. Why would a recruiter/HR rep risk their reputation and job by recommending a candidate who's hiding something, when they have plenty of qualified candidates with nothing to hide?
Finally, what kind of first impression do you think you make in a face-to-face or video interview, when you've set expectations on your resume that you're younger than you appear (to a stranger, in a stressful situation, on video that adds 10 lbs)? When the first thing an interviewer sees is that you've deceived the ATS to get an interview, how can you possibly build any sort of trust? You might have well not even shown up for the interview.
Good thing there are some very effective ways to beat ageism. Even better that these resume/job search strategies are seldom taught, giving you a big advantage over others.
Why not let me teach you some of these far more effective changes to your resume/job search strategies that will help you beat ageism? While we're at it, I'll teach you ways to accelerate your job search, so you can find your next job in early 2021.
This is the 3rd recession I've recruited/coached through, so I've seen first hand what resume and job search strategies succeed during recessions. I've also seen mistakes candidates make, causing their recession job searches to fail. I've been through this before and know what works and what doesn't.
That's why numerous job seekers who work with me have already gotten job offers this March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January and February - every week since mid-March.
As a top national recruiter who reads hundreds of resumes per day, who has helped hundreds of thousands of candidates in their job search, and seen thousands of employers' job search processes from the inside, I've got a different perspective than most career coaches.
I see that most job seekers do essentially the same things, even when they think they are job searching differently. I see the mistakes that almost every age 40+ job seeker makes that make them lose great opportunities. I also see most job seekers were taught search methods that eliminate them from consideration, because they conflict with the employer's hiring process.
But I've been teaching job seekers to overcome ageism for 13+ years by using non-traditional resume/job search strategies that demonstrate impact rather than just being average. I'll show you how to beat ageism and find a great job during the recession by understanding employers' point of view and hiring processes ... and using this understanding to beat your competition.
(I'm not just a career coach. I've also been a top national recruiter for the last 16+ years ... so you'll get advice from a different perspective - an insider's point of view.)
Let me show you what you can do now to change your job search and resume so you can beat ageism during the recession, even if you're also between jobs, trying to change careers, industry or location, if your industry is in decline/consolidation, trying to overcome long term career gaps, family leave, find a remote job, turnaround your job search or other tough to solve job search problems.
