Controversial Marketing/Shock Marketing Tactics:  

What is it that makes an advert stand out?

Often the ads that stand out, and the ones we tend to remember are the ads that touch on controversial topics.

Controversial marketing is often done by brands that choose not to play it safe, and advertise products and services in a manner that provokes controversy and deliberately challenges the norm.

"Offbeat, controversial and edgy campaigns create an experience that others will want to share." The more shares a controversial ad gets, the more it helps to directly increase a customer's awareness of your brand.

If done correctly a controversial marketing campaign can spur your brand in the forefront of a consumer's mind quicker than any other form of advertising. Controversial marketing can set your brand apart from competitors and helps your brand to build its own personality, but it must be done in a creative and smart manner.  

It is important to remember that "a successful controversial marketing campaign predicts the public’s reactions from all angles before its implemented." Although the campaign may offend some people, its vital to ensure the subject will receive a positive reaction from the majority otherwise the ad will become a huge flop.

That's very true. Reminds me of the controversial Wicknell inspired Stanbic ad. I'm actually on the verge om opening an account with them and that may easily have been a factor.
