Controls for Projects and Benefits. Working towards the New Big Picture with New National Standards

When your world lacks vision and leadership. Don't just stand there. Do it yourself!

There is nothing worse than thinking a job is being done and then discovering it isn't.

After a particularly nasty scrap a couple of years ago I realised that most of the organisations we subscribe to and who endorse our professional standing were only in it for themselves. Their leaderships ditto. All the effort and creativity I had freely given had done nothing but make a world which cared more about maintaining the status quo. Only supporting if there was money in it. Creating and preserving elites. And completely ignoring the by the members for the members ethos and for the good of society values upon which they were built,

I could have forgiven many of these aspects if they had known what the answers were. Provided vision and leadership. But the great and the good in these bodies seem now to come in two formats. Invisible and useless or nauseatingly ever-present on social media and useless.

I also realised that far from enabling progress with agility they hindered it. So if like me you were prepared to expend vast amounts of energy on making the world a better safer more equal and diverse place then this is what I realised.Cut out the middlemen. Aim to create practice and policy at the highest national and international levels. And don't seek to own or limit this work. Create promote and pull into use national standards for the use of all. Encourage ownership by creating purpose and giving opportunity to organisations and practitioners who can all take a stake. Public and National interest always front and centre.

Work is just about to start on new National Standards for Project Controls and Benefits Management. Due in 18 months. They will be concurrently developed. Their use and purpose is interrelated. Much energy has gone into the creation of Benefits management. The trouble is someone forgot to dynamically link them to the whole cycle of creation delivery and verification. A cycle which begins before most projects are kicked off and often only really delivers long after the projects have completed. The two practices will be properly able to integrate. The controls community is perfectly suited to inhabit that cycle and the benefits community will have a way of really evidencing if their dreams have come true. We will have the New Big Picture. A right to left and top to bottom view across the whole organisational portfolio will be the possiblenew normal. All possible in real-time driven by the power of modern technology. New Vision New Purpose.

Work continues grows and accelerates on the introduction of Fusion Skills.

A whole movement is coming together that will create the Smart Citizens we need for the Smart Cities using National Standards to govern and define.

If you want to really associate with like minded individuals then join the conversation. The EVA event is now the vehicle for the ideas and the people who actually have a plan for with and on behalf of the greater good.

I would argue a common core data model is a key enabler within a Project Controls community that wants to collaborate with colleagues, partners and customers. The Core P3M Data club has put a v1 into the public domain. This has had over 60 contributors, and has created a sample database to exemplify it. Club here - it’s free and voluntary, for the public good. https://www.dhirubhai.net/groups/13651399/

Steve Wake great to see this. I find industries have lost the learnings from 20 years ago, we still need to push Project Controls hard for the greater good.
