Controlling water levels in the canals of the Netherlands with LoRa

A circuit of the small inland waterways and canals with stops at the numerous quays is a so-called ‘must do’ for tourists as they say. For municipalities or canal authorities however, it is of great importance to have insight in the water level of these canals to prevent them from flooding.

To gain more insight in the water level of the canals, the Ministry of Infrastructure (Rijkswaterstaat) uses sensors with RS232 protocols. Since this technology is quite an old-fashioned one, it is not suited for controlling the water level from several canals real-time from a distance.

This is why Smartlog transformed these RS232 sensors into intelligent devices by connecting them to the KPN LoRa network and by visualizing the sensor data on the Smartlog platform. Connecting these sensors and making them LoRa-compliant, it becomes easy for Rijkswaterstaat to monitor the sensor data remotely, to set alerts & open sluices in case of flooding danger and to gain real-time insight in the water level of all the canals in the Netherlands.

Smartlog is proud to have established a wireless sensor network communicating with the KPN LoRa network to make sure Rijkwaterstaat has real-time insight in the water level of their canals at any moment from any location thanks to the visualizations of this sensor data on a personal platform.
