The contribution of women in tech

The Tech industry has always been a predominantly male industry, with only a few women in high level positions. Icons like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have instilled inspiration for many individuals, including the directors of Topcode, Ndivhuwo Nthambeleni and Lerato Mathibe who both founded Topcode in 2018.?

According to an article by The undercover recruiter 1, women are increasingly becoming huge players in tech, as 20% of start-ups across the world are funded by women. Lerato Mathibe, the Co- Founder of Topcode, being part of this statistic.

There are a number of women that have contributed to the development and advance of technology over the years, to name a few; Ada Lovelace (the world's first computer programmer) and Elizabeth Feinler(The original search engine). These women have proven the quote by NASA Mathematician, Katherine Johnson, that says:

Girls are capable of doing everything men are capable of doing. Sometimes they have more imagination than men”

Women are the backbone in the tech industry as their contributions can not go unnoticed2. This article will look into the journey of the women that drive Topcode and how they wish to contribute towards the rapidly growing future of tech in their personal capacity.??

Lerato Mathibe, Co-founder and director at topcode, left her corporate occupation in 2021, to join Ndivhuwo Nthambeleni in growing Topcode as a brand and a software development company. Lerato describes this as a good move that was motivated by words brought by Topcode’s director and lead developer, Ndivhuwo Nthambeleni, in the words of Lerato “He believed that as a Chartered Accountant with corporate experience I was the right person with the right skill set to assist him in the vision of transforming our “hustle” into a successful corporation.” and today as it stands, Topcode is gaining a favourable reputation within the tech industry, working with popular brands and companies such as GirlCode Za, Mac G’s Podcast and Chill to name a few. Topcode currently employs two female developers; Rorisang Kwte and Bakang Sebetlele, with an aim to grow this number exponentially over time.?

In the words of a female flutter developer at Topcde, Bakang Sebetlele,?

"My journey at Topcode has by far been great! So full of learning and upskilling. The team is filled with great individuals to work with and learn from. My experience as being a "woman in tech" has been fairly positive, and one that I've found pretty rewarding. Working in the tech industry is fascinating. You get to build things from scratch, things that have never been built before, bringing an idea to life. For women who find joy in technology and wish to pursue it professionally, my major suggestion is to make friends with people in the industry that can result in sharing great ideas or even better assist one another with most faced/or common challenges. Also, bring your whole self to work, and don't be afraid to ask for assistance as we never stop learning.

The directors of Topcode, have set out to achieve sustainability, growth, ethics and Transparency in the workplace. Creating value for both the clients and employees. According to Rorisang Kwete, a flutter developer at Topcde,? ‘As expected, my experience at Topcode has been both worthwhile and challenging. What stands out for me is that my seniors let me figure out the solution on my own and only intervene when necessary.I chose to work in technology because I was inspired by seeing other women do the job so well and proving to us all that it is possible. My goal is to never be afraid of the future simply because things aren't going well right now. I want to strive for more and pave the way for other young women out there, just as other women did for me.”
