The culture of a workplace is a critical element for success that underpins the company’s goals and targets. There is an extent to which this is created from the top down but as individuals we are also responsible for making a positive contribution to workplace culture. This can depend on how well the values of the business are communicated to staff and whether there is a continual conversation around what the organisation stands for.
How leadership contributes
There should be discussions that take place in an organisation about the values and beliefs it wants to promote and reflect. There are signs when a business has placed its culture high on the agenda.
· There are visible clear organisational goals
· Each department has unique goals
· Diversity and inclusivity are promoted
· Respect is prioritised.
· An employee recognition program is in place
· Strategies for developing resilience are in place
Many businesses now understand how important is spend time and energy putting policies and strategies into place through engaging in continuous communication with the team.
How individuals contribute
If a business has spent a great deal of time developing its culture than it should have spent time engaging and communicating with employees throughout this process. The best way to support this is to reflect the values of that culture. It means setting an example which could mean openly discussing your own personal challenges, how you dealt with them and built resilience. When someone is struggling it can be supportive to hear someone else’s story, they may feel less isolated by hearing your own struggles. Try to recognise and celebrate your colleagues for their achievements when they go over and above. Another way you could contribute as an individual is to initiate activities that have a positive impact on your colleagues. When special occasions or life events are acknowledged at work or an effort is made to organise works social events, it creates a caring positive culture.
Connectivity and benefits to employees and employer
When an employer has a positive workplace culture then this contributes to a brand that retains talent, accomplishes their business goals, and achieves financial success. An environment that is communicative is more likely to meet and exceed business targets and be at forefront of innovation. An employee who supports this culture is a valuable part of the process. When they work and behave in a positive way then this adds to the workplace making it a desirable environment.
Contributing to positive workplace culture
To be a part of a positive workplace culture, biggest thing you can do is get to know your colleagues including management. We are people and our connection to one another builds a bond in a positive way. Take an interest in the people you work with and not just in terms of how they relate to your specific job role. The takeaways:
· Show up
· Engage
· Celebrate others
· Be a brand ambassador
· Set an example
