I have often come across people who think the responsibilities they are entrusted with are inadequate to their capabilities, their plate is not full and the assignments they are bestowed with does not justify their full potential.
This article is meant to address all such people who feel they are worth more, people who want to contribute beyond their call of duty and shine through their lateral thinking and initiatives taken beyond the words specified in ther JDs. Here are certain things that you can do which do not need to be assigned with.
1. Have a strong Digital foot print:
Having created a strong online reputation, not only enhances your visibility but when you link your Organisation along with your experiences, it helps the organisation gain some great visibility as well. Write a Blog, do a Podcasts, Vlog your experiences of life, open your professional Youtube channel, have your own Website, voice your opinion, become an influencer and have a strong presense online. Perks for you could be, you may be invited to be part of the Branding initiatives of your organisation!
Sharing Experience:
Working?in one of my previous stints as an HR, I was assigned a role of writing the Employees Newsletter with Walchandnagar Industries Limited. This was so well appreciated that soon I was offered an additional role with Corporate Communication reporting directly to the then CEO Mr G K Pillai!
2. Build a strong Network
Go out and meet your colleagues, clients, vendors for a cup of coffee or go for a get togethers, may be a dinner, take active participation in Professional conferences post working hours, this not only increases your network but also helps in building good public relations, attracts talents towards your organisation and does more for your organisation in bringing visibility. When your connections brings deals to your organisation and helps them with their organisational objectives, you get browny points! Also this helps you make you friends with likeminded networking groups who enjoy discussing issues and achievements and share insights, your horizons expand!
3. Showcase the Organisational initiatives:
If your Organisation keeps taking Employee Friendly initiatives from time to time, showcase them to the Industry peers. Not only the Organisation gets accolades for taking such initiatives but you also get associated strongly with the brand to the world at large, when people around me think of building their houses, they come asking me Steel requirements, since I am working for Shyam Steel Industries!
Sharing Experience:
My current Organisation, Shyam Steel Industries, conducted Vaccination camp for the employees for free, their family members and Vendor Partners at a time when availability of Vaccines was difficult. I filmed the entire initiative with the process and put it on Linkedin! It got quite a good amount of visibility and my ability to make creative Vlogs, got an added assignment on creating videos for Virtual onboarding...!

4. Share your expertise with the World:
You come with a set of knowledge and expertise and time to time, showcase them to the clients, industry peers and network, offer free Live sessions, Podcasts, Blogs and Vlogs with examples relatable to the work you have done in the past and spilling over to your current organisation. This will not only help beginners in the Trade who are looking for guidance, bring you visibility in the industry but also remind the Organisational leaders of your capabilities and expertise.
Sharing Experience:
Between jobs, I was taking time off from work when I was interacting with Industry colleagues and understood from them that students from colleges are looking for expert knowledge and practical experience of understanding of Performance Evaluation system is a subject that is beyond many and my experience of implementing the Balanced Score card may come handy. I did a Webinar on the subject and many people came up to me and asked questions in the Webinar and wanted help with their organisation as well.
5. Identify overlooked areas and offer help:
There are a lot of areas that are overlooked in an organisation, especially in bigger organisations where there are multiple stakeholders and approval processes are slower than smaller and leaner Companies, look out for them and create assignments for yourself. There are many processes which may not have SOPs, the Company website may have grammatical errors, there might be newer employees who need help with processes and SOPs, or a Training on Pivot/ Excel. Offer help, be available to serve others. The entire concept of Servant Leadership comes through this whereby you create a culture of trust with your unselfish mindset, ?view your job?as serving all the people around?and counterintuitively, another way?of putting this is making love and serving people your top priority, contribute to the growth and wellbeing of people around you.
Sharing Experience:
When I was working with Himadri Chemicals, I started as a PMS Expert, IC role, but PMS was a quarterly/half yearly activity there and I had ample amount of time in my hand, so i started doing a lot of Trainings on PMS, writing the Score cards, creating KPIS from KRAs, setting and cascading Goals et all.. soon I was asked to handle the Training Verticle and next thing I knew was, I was leading all Learning & Development verticle, employee Welfare activities, Employee Engagement activities and later, I was given the responsibility of the HRD of a whole Business verticle to lead with a Team to report to me, and PMS, they implemented the process I introduced in the Division everywhere, the HQ, Plants and Sites, even after I moved on...
When you do these things, beyond your call of duty, it makes you feel positive, gain perspective, enrich experiences of life and have your plate full. Be grateful, not being overwhelmed with assignments, think you have been missing looking around, doing off beat things, the finer things in life. None can take your path away from you, every individual has a purpose and all you need to do is find out your purpose and go following the calling. To Quote Swami Vivekananda, "when the seed is put in the ground, and earth and air and water are placed around it. Does the seed become the earth, or the air, or the water? No. It becomes a plant. It develops after the law of its own growth, assimilates the air, the earth, and the water, converts them into plant substance, and grows into a plant."
We are all meant to be ourselves, become the better version of ourselves and if our work or not having enough work comes in between, it's our job to create work for ourself!
