A Contractor’s Role in HVACR Education
ESCO Institute-HVAC Excellence
It is our mission to improve the technical competency of the HVACR Industry.
In the HVACR industry, contractors face a significant challenge in finding qualified individuals to fill open positions. Many job applicants lack the necessary skills for success as HVACR service technicians and often demand high compensation. While it's a common belief that smaller contractors struggle to compete with larger companies in terms of salary and benefits, the reality is that the employment gap is an industry-wide issue, as evidenced by the struggles even prominent contractor associations face in filling positions.
Engaging Generation Z in HVACR Careers
When questioning contractors about whose responsibility it is to recruit future HVACR technicians from high schools, the predominant response often points to HVACR instructors at community colleges and trade schools. However, relying solely on educators for recruitment isn't feasible due to various constraints, including limited time and resources. Therefore, the responsibility for recruiting the next generation of HVACR technicians should be shared among all stakeholders, including contractors.
Visiting High Schools
Contractors are uniquely positioned to convey the appeal of HVACR careers directly to students. By visiting high schools, contractors can share their success stories and dispel misconceptions about trade professions perpetuated by parents and counselors. Armed with reliable data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics, contractors can highlight the vast opportunities available in the HVACR industry without the need for a traditional four-year degree.

Joining Program Advisory Committees
Participating in Program Advisory Committee meetings allows contractors to provide valuable insights into HVACR training programs. By reviewing curriculum, equipment, and tools used in these programs, contractors can ensure graduates are well-prepared to meet industry demands. Moreover, involvement in internship or apprenticeship programs provides contractors with firsthand experience of students' potential suitability for employment.
Educating Through Non-Traditional Means
Given the unique nature of the HVACR industry, non-traditional recruitment methods are essential. Hosting events in collaboration with HVACR programs, participating in robotics tournaments, or sponsoring engaging activities can attract students who may not have considered HVACR careers otherwise.
Educating Friends, Family, and Neighbors
Word-of-mouth remains a powerful tool in recruitment. Contractors can leverage their personal networks to spread awareness about the rewarding opportunities in the HVACR industry. By sharing their own experiences and highlighting the dynamic nature of HVACR work, contractors can inspire others to consider a career in the field.
In conclusion, addressing the shortage of HVACR technicians requires a collaborative effort from all industry stakeholders. By actively engaging in recruitment efforts and promoting the attractiveness of HVACR careers, contractors can play a pivotal role in shaping the future workforce of the industry.

My body simply cont do the job anymore but my mind is very sharp and I could certainly represent a company well if someone out there would just give me a chance please! Otherwise, I will have to end my HVAC career altogether after investing over 25 years in the trade. Don’t you think my experience is good for something better than to be thrown away! Harold Rogers
