Contractor Spotlight: Thriving in the flexibility of remote contracting

"Working from home has given me the flexibility to excel in my career while balancing my personal life – it's the perfect setup for me." – Anita Taray

?

This Contractor Spotlight is based on an interview conducted by Marlon Ocampo , Strategic Workforce Manager at CXC. In this engaging conversation, Marlon uncovers the story of Anita Taray , an experienced professional in the accounting field, who embraced the flexibility and benefits of remote contract employment. Anita shares her experiences of transitioning from a traditional office-based role to remote working, the key highlights of her career, and how CXC has supported her along the way.

?

Why Anita chose contract employment

Anita Taray’s shift to contract employment was motivated by both personal and professional reasons. Having previously worked face-to-face for a Japanese company, she began rethinking her work setup when the pandemic hit in 2020. "I realised I wanted to work from home, not just to avoid the exhausting daily commute, but also to care for my father, who was unwell," Anita explains. The grueling two-hour journey to her previous workplace each day was draining, prompting her to seek a better balance between work and life.

?

When Anita joined SOFRA in 2022, she was particularly drawn to the opportunity of fully remote work. Unlike hybrid setups, SOFRA’s model allowed Anita to work entirely from home, meeting her colleagues only twice a year for team-building sessions. "For me, working from home has been a great experience. Some people might not enjoy it, but I really do," she says, reflecting on the positive impact of remote work on her lifestyle.

?

Anita’s key job highlights

Anita’s career at SOFRA began in accounts payable (AP) processing, but by early 2023, she transitioned to a new role in accounts receivable (AR), where she now leads a team managing financial operations for 21 hotels (soon to expand to 22). This new role marked Anita’s first experience with remote work, and while she enjoyed the flexibility, she faced several challenges—particularly in adapting to various technological tools and systems on her own.

?

Additionally, communication presented some hurdles due to SOFRA’s headquarters being based in France. With language differences sometimes complicating things, Anita utilised translation tools to facilitate smoother interactions with her French-speaking colleagues and ensure effective communication.

?

Despite these challenges, Anita made a substantial impact in her AR role. She implemented new processes that improved task management, enhanced collaboration with other teams, and optimised delegation across her department. "The key to success is delegation," she notes, explaining how she ensured that tasks were assigned effectively to allow the team to function seamlessly.

?

Anita’s insights on contractor employment

For Anita, moving into contract employment meant ensuring she fully understood the contractor setup and its policies. "Initially, I was concerned about job security," she admits, but with CXC’s transparency and support, she became more confident in the contractor model. As a contractor, Anita feels empowered, thanks to the ongoing support from CXC, which allows her to manage her work with independence.

?

Her advice for those considering contractor roles is clear: "Make sure you know your ‘why’ before deciding on contract work." Whether it’s the desire for better work-life balance, the need for flexibility, or a focus on professional development, understanding your motivations is crucial for thriving in a contractor environment. Anita also stresses the importance of enhancing technical skills, as remote contract work often requires a high level of independence.

?

Balancing work and life

One of the biggest advantages of contractor employment for Anita has been the ability to achieve a better work-life balance. Working from home has given her the freedom to spend more time with her family, particularly in caring for her father, while also excelling in her professional responsibilities. "I have more time to read, attend seminars, and enjoy my hobbies," she says. Contractor employment has not only allowed her to manage her schedule more effectively but also given her the flexibility to lead a more fulfilling personal life.

?

Looking forward: Security and growth

While Anita enjoys the benefits of contractor employment, she is also focused on securing long-term stability and tenure. She believes that contractor management can provide this, especially when employers value and recognise the hard work and performance of their contractors. "Long-term security and stability are important to me, and I’m hopeful that contractor management can provide this," Anita explains.

?

Anita Taray’s journey highlights the many advantages that remote contractor employment can offer, from greater flexibility and improved work-life balance to personal and professional growth. With the continued support of CXC, Anita has not only navigated the challenges of remote work but also excelled in her role, contributing significantly to her organisation.
