Contract Staffing- Will it Work for Your Business Model?

Contract staffing refers to the practice of hiring employees on a temporary or short-term basis to fill a specific need or role within an organization. These employees, also known as contractors, are generally not considered to be permanent members of the organization and do not receive the same benefits as full-time employees. Contract staffing can be a useful way for organizations to fill temporary gaps in their workforce, bring in specialized skills or expertise on a project-by-project basis, or increase their staffing levels during busy periods. It can also be a good option for individuals who prefer the flexibility and variety of working on a contract basis.

What are some differences?

  1. Length of employment: Contract staffing is typically a short-term arrangement, lasting anywhere from a few days to several months. Full-time placement is a permanent position, with an indefinite length of employment.
  2. Benefits: Contractors generally do not receive the same benefits as full-time employees, such as health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plans.
  3. Job duties: Contractors are usually hired to fill a specific need or role within an organization, and their job duties are often narrowly defined. Full-time employees may have more broad-ranging responsibilities and the opportunity to take on additional tasks and responsibilities.
  4. Employment status: Contractors are typically considered to be "at-will" employees, meaning that either the employer or the employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason (with some exceptions). Full-time employees may have more job security, depending on the terms of their employment contract and applicable laws.
  5. Cost to the employer: It can be more expensive for an organization to bring on a full-time employee, due to the additional costs associated with benefits and longer-term employment. Hiring a contractor can be a more cost-effective option for short-term needs.

When considering contract staffing or project management over direct hire, the best strategy for most businesses is to use a combination of both. For short term goals that need to be achieved or implementation a contractor will usually fulfill the need.
