Top Tips for Prompt Payment in Construction

How to Get Paid for the Work You Do!

You work hard all day, ensuring you abide by your main contractor’s rules and regulations, so it’s no wonder that it feels like a slap in the face when invoices go unanswered and unpaid.?? ? ?

Raising a payment dispute is often the go-to for many subcontractors when they don’t receive their entitled payment. But before it turns into a payment dispute, there are several things you can do.?

Try these tips on your next project to ensure you get paid for the work you do:??

  • Ensure all condition precedents to payment have been performed. Many contracts have provisions that prevent payment until a certain action has been undertaken by the party awaiting payment. For example, the contract may require the return of a signed contract, bonds or guarantees, and evidence that the contracted level of insurance is maintained prior to payment being made.???

  • Timely compliance with the payment application dates in the contract. Many contracts state that if the payment application is submitted late, it will be treated as if it had been submitted for the following month. Avoid unnecessary delays with timely compliance.?

  • Submit applications for payment in a format that clearly identifies the amount due and explains the basis that the amount due has been calculated. The amounts claimed in the payment application should be substantiated by records that prove the progress, variations, and materials on-site claims as true and accurate. ??
  • If you do not receive the due payment by the final payment date, promptly issue a Notice of Intention to suspend the works. Ensure such notice is in accordance with the provisions of the contract or The Construction Act – whichever applies.

Don't be afraid to speak up if you are not paid for your work. Talk to your client and try to resolve the issue amicably. If you are still not getting paid, that’s when Nexus comes in – we will get you paid.? ?

The Impact of Technology on Commercial Management & QS

Is AI Having a Negative Impact??

Technological advancements are changing the landscape of commercial management and quantity surveying (QS), but is it for the better? ? ?

Building Information Modelling (BIM), cloud-based project management software, and AI can all streamline QS processes, enhance decision-making, and open the door to new possibilities.? ?

Is AI having a negative impact on the industry? It depends on who you ask!? ?

On one hand, AI and technological advancements promise high levels of efficiency and productivity. When implemented correctly, AI can act as a strategic enabler, which naturally frees up commercial managers and QSs, allowing them to focus on decision-making, collaboration, and shaping sustainable built environments.? ?

On the other hand, the extent of new technology isn’t fully understood. For example, BIM software will undoubtedly present challenges, but its real impact on the UK market is still unclear. However, the government is keen to implement BIM in their projects, so adaptation is crucial for the industry.? ?

Will AI take over? No, there will always be a need for commercial management and quantity surveying (human) experts. However, the roles of commercial management and QS will need to evolve and adapt to accommodate AI.?
