Continuous Self Improvement

Senior Director Supply Chain Operations - Removing barriers to accessing healthy & nutritious food
I recently completed a supply chain certificate program administered by the Association For Supply Chain Management (ASCM) - (The global leader in supply chain organizational transformation). The organization confers the designation of being certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD). Essentially declaring that this individual has the core competencies needed to optimize all aspects of the movement of products for more efficient and sustainable supply chain. The question for myself was never should I continue to hone and improve my skills and competencies? Rather, when is the right time? And how?
The answer(s) to the questions of when? And how? Will be different for everyone. We all have constraints to consider; whether it is financial, social, or time related to name a few. However, a key point to keep in mind is that as we practice the principles of continuous improvement within our organizations, Six Sigma, Lean, Agile, etc. As we continue to increase revenue, and minimize costs all while maximizing customer satisfaction. Are these skill sets, competences, knowledge base, and experiences, still relevant outside of my current organization? If the answer is no, then that may be an explanation as to why, quite often many professionals, even though they are “stars” within their organizations, remain trapped in the same role, and trapped within the organization.
Our respective industries are evolving and innovating at an unprecedented rate, we have all seen the advancements of AI and robotics. The onus is on us my friends! We must stay ahead or at least on par with the industry. We must work on ourselves as much as we work on improving the bottom line!
