Continuous Delivery (CD) to your rescue

In my previous blog post "How to avoid the common pitfalls of Fixed Price model?", I talked about the issues with the Fixed Price model for implementing technology projects. Most of us have seen this model fail on multiple projects. One of the big reason for the failure is this assumption that everything is going to be standstill and requirements will not change during the entire life-cycle of the project, which can be several months. But things don't work like that in the technology world.

This is where Continuous Delivery (CD) comes to rescue. I know, you must be wondering how I can compare CD which is an implementation methodology with Fixed Price projects, which is a pricing model. Agreed, there is no direct co-relation between the two. In fact you may find some vendors offering to utilize CD model on their fixed price project (although that's an oxymoron).

Continuous Delivery is the ability to deliver small chunks of the project, to production or into the hands of the users, reliably and in quick succession. The biggest advantages of CD are faster time to market, lower risk of failure and higher quality products. Apart from this, CD allows the organizations to be agile and react quickly to any market changes.

So on your next project, provide a fairly detailed scope document and ask your vendors (or internal IT) to come up with a proposal that includes the recommended Continuous Delivery team structure, unit pricing (hourly rates), proposed timeline and estimated project cost. Define clear milestones, deliverables and set responsibilities for everyone and you will see great results.
