Continuing transformation conversations

I had a great chat Wednesday during our first virtual forum with CEOs from NAFCU-only credit unions. I appreciated the honest feedback, and I hope to hear from more of you in the upcoming forums over the next two weeks.

In response to members’ questions, we also updated our merger website to include both our organizations’ 2022 financial statements and updated frequently asked questions.

The refreshed FAQs cover the voting process and timeline, membership participation and dues, board governance and structure, events, and other general merger-related questions.

We’ve also included a video of the insightful conversation I had with NAFCU Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Greg Mesack earlier this month at NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus. We had a terrific talk about the future of credit union advocacy, the merger itself, and how we’re working on current issues facing credit unions.

Credit unions preparing for government shutdown

As of Friday morning, Congress has not agreed on funding the federal government past 11:59 p.m. ET Sept. 30. Unless both chambers send a funding bill to the president, the government will shut down. Credit unions are prepared to spring into action as financial first responders. I reached out to credit unions this week asking for information on the credit union difference at work when things get tough. Please send in the ways your credit union will help members affected by a shutdown.

SAFER Banking Act passes committee

The Senate Banking Committee advanced the SAFER Banking Act—which would protect financial institutions serving legal cannabis businesses—with a 14-9 vote Wednesday. The House passed the earlier version of this bill, the SAFE Banking Act, seven times, and we’re thrilled to see it move forward in the Senate. This bipartisan common-sense bill addresses serious legal and public safety concerns, and we’ll continue our engagement with senators to keep up this momentum.

More from 360-degree advocacy?

  • We joined NAFCU in opposition to a “minibus” amendment to enact a 36% all-in rate cap on credit products. While we appreciate its goals, such a cap would harm consumers and access to credit.?
  • Thank you to League of Southeastern Credit Unions President Samantha Beeler for her op-ed in an Alabama publication on how Alabamians would cover the increased costs that come with the big box interchange bill. ?
  • CUNA, NAFCU, and other organizations met with the Federal Communications Commission on its Telephone Consumer Protection Act and call blocking notification proposals.
  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., died Thursday evening, and was a strong supporter of credit unions throughout her trailblazing career.?
