Continuing Legal Education: Embracing Lifelong Learning in the Legal Profession

Happy Monday lifelong learners! Today, we're highlighting the importance of continuous education and up-skilling for new and experienced lawyers in the rapidly changing legal landscape. As the legal profession evolves, it is essential to stay current with the latest developments in technology, regulations, and best practices. Because as we all know, in the world of law, knowledge is power!

Christina Blacklaws (she/her) , Head of Faculty at the Legal Technology & Innovation Institute (LT&I), emphasises the significance of legal professionals embracing lifelong learning. In a recent interview, she stated:

"Today's legal professionals must be agile and adaptive in the face of a rapidly changing legal landscape. By investing in continuing education, lawyers not only enhance their skills but also demonstrate their commitment to staying at the forefront of their profession. Lifelong learning is an indispensable asset for modern lawyers, and the LT&I is dedicated to providing high-quality, cutting-edge courses across innovation and technology to facilitate this growth."

In a recent ABA Journal article , author Amanda Robert discusses how lawyers can meet their ethical obligation to be competent in technology. According to Model Rule 1.1 of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, competent representation requires "legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness, and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation." In 2012, the ABA House of Delegates amended Comment 8 to Model Rule 1.1 to explicitly include guidance on lawyers' use of technology. This change underscores the importance of technology competence for lawyers in the digital age.

The article also highlights the role of law schools in preparing students to be technologically competent lawyers. Law schools must ensure that students understand the basics of technology, such as Microsoft Office and video conferencing platforms like Zoom. Furthermore, they need to expose students to emerging technologies, such as AI-powered legal research tools, ChatGPT, and contract analysis tools, which are transforming the practice of law.

Kelli Raker, the associate program director for law, technology, and entrepreneurship programs at Duke University School of Law, adds that it's crucial for law students to learn how to incorporate a design mindset early in their careers. This approach prepares them for a world that is increasingly tech-driven and encourages open-mindedness and imagination when solving problems with technology.

In recognition of the growing need for practical technology training, the Legal Technology and Innovation Institute (LT&I) has designed a hands-on, experiential learning approach that allows lawyers to truly immerse themselves in the latest legal technologies. Moving beyond traditional theoretical methods, the LT&I's courses prioritise real-world applications, enabling participants to "get their hands dirty" with technology. This includes interactive workshops, simulations, and live case studies that allow lawyers to experiment with new tools and techniques, enhancing their understanding of how to leverage technology effectively in their practice.

By focusing on practical skills and problem-solving, the LT&I ensures that legal professionals are well-equipped to meet the challenges of an increasingly tech-driven legal landscape, while staying true to their ethical obligations of competence and providing the best possible representation for their clients.
