Continuing the discussion on Ethiopia’s joining the BRICS
Recent media reports indicated that some members might have played a bigger role in convincing others to admit Ethiopia to the Group. Whatever the case, Ethiopia's membership in #BRICS is a diplomatic achievement for the country. It is a sign that Ethiopia is a rising power in the global system.
However, it is not an end by any means – the ultimate end being to improve Ethiopians' lives. It should be seen as one of the tools to end Ethiopians' numerous forms of suffering in the short term and make Ethiopia a stable democracy in the long run, nothing more. A recent Editorial of The Reporter argues that what matters is how Ethiopia "does its homework." I want to build on that. There is no doubt that membership in the Group will help Ethiopia:
Ethiopia's recent macroeconomic performance leaves much to be desired, however. Sluggish economic growth, high inflation, unemployment, and a lack and dwindling of foreign currency reserves have all characterized the country's recent macroeconomic performance. Ethiopia is also facing a humanitarian crisis. Millions need humanitarian assistance, and the war in Tigray is far from over. Many parts of the Oromia region are also unsafe. The situation of the entire Amhara Region is alarming; the central government seems to have lost its grip by the day.
The road ahead for Ethiopia seems thorny. However, the country has a long history of resilience and has overcome challenges. With the right policies and reforms, Ethiopia can overcome its current challenges and be a vibrant member of the Group.
Therefore, what matters most is how Ethiopia does its homework.
END.
