Continuing conflict in Papua provinces

New analysis on Indonesia

Between January–September 2024, several spikes in armed conflict occurred in the six Papua provinces of Indonesia. In September 2024, researchers estimated that the current conflict had brought the total number of IDPs in the region to nearly 80,000. Indonesia has denied UN agencies access to Papua since 2018. We analyse developments in the conflict in Papua in 2024, which indicate worsening humanitarian needs among affected communities.
