Continued Progress

Continued Progress

Reading time: 3 minutes

For those outside of financial services I wanted to share a post I did on Linkedin earlier in the week. It’s largely common sense but feedback was the analogy was useful.

For most people, the financial prescription remains the same:

?? Spend less

??Have an emergency fund

?? Save more

?? Make use of your allowances (UK)

?? Protect yourself

?? Protect your earnings

?? Pay off (bad) debt where possible

What can differ wildly is your financial diet:

?? Income

?? Basic expenses

?? Subscriptions

?? Lifestyle costs

?? Spending on fun

?? Any debt repayments

Your financial diet is personal to you. The financial prescription is a great way to start, and to keep going.

By taking the prescription you can control the diet. However, your financial diet alone may not be sufficient to reach your goals.

In other news aside from teaching and coaching some lessons during my time in the Army, I have wanted to explore this area further and gain an official qualification. As such, I enrolled in a coaching qualification by the MOE Foundation. This week marked the start and it is a 6-week course. The testimonials from the course describes it as transformational.

This week I’ve been getting to know the accountancy branches I look after. I value getting to know people better and having the resource of being able to call trusted accountants with questions is invaluable. After all, at times, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Dave Robinson FCCA APFS MCSI TEP LLAA IMC is an advocate for accountants and financial advisory relationships. He is/was a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial adviser and is an advocate for a joint approach as it can add tremendous value to clients.

Alan Smith is the founder of an established and very successful firm in London, Capital Asset Management runs a podcast “The Bulletproof Entrepreneur”. He interviewed Phil Bray??The Financial Services Marketing Guy?? . If you are working within an advisory business, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Phil as he very kindly delivers a lot of (valuable) content. The contents of the interview made me realise, once again, that we all have secret battles and however successful one may seem on the surface, the reality can be far from it. Phil has truly battled through adversity. Whether, you the reader, are an adviser or have your own business. I implore you to take a listen. There’s valuable advice in the podcast from Phil and delivers further truth about having your own company.

Aside from the podcast episode recommendation I haven’t progressed with the other books. I love being a sponge for information but in equal measure, it’s important to completely unplug and reflect back on learning material. For any new entrants or career changers who may be reading this newsletter. Two people to follow and try to have a conversation with are Dave Robinson and Rob Atherton. Dave has now retired from being an adviser after selling out of his business and Rob is very passionate about helping new advisers. The more conversation you have and the more you connect with people the more you increase your chances of success.
