Continued Commitment to Learning

This month's newsletter from FPR Executive Coaching is on why it is important for all leaders to commit to self development and learning to enhance our career prospects and to manage our longevity in the business world.

So let's dive straight into why a commitment to learning and development is truly important and of paramount value for leaders?

A learning and development plan is crucial for leaders for several reasons:

1. Adaptability: Charles Darwin talked about 'the survival of the fittest,' being the most 'adaptable.' The business landscape is constantly changing and at an unprecedented rate. Therefore it is imperative that leaders stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and strategies to navigate these changes effectively. Each industry evolves at pace and keeping abreast of these developments is key. This equips leaders to better lead their teams too, making use of concepts; frameworks and technology that also enhance productivity and efficiencies. Strong soft skills and fostering a safe environment for authentic idea exchange are key too.

2. Innovation & Inspiration: Continuous learning inspires creativity and more innovation. Leaders who invest in their continuous development are more likely to generate new ideas and offer solutions as well as be curious about how to improve processes and ways of working and collaboration.

3. Upskilling: Leaders need a wide variety of skills, from communication, influencing, commercial acumen to cultural and emotional intelligence. Ongoing development helps them refine and expand these skills to meet the needs of the organisations and cultures they are in.

4. Team Growth: A leader's commitment to learning can set a really positive example for their team, encouraging a culture of growth and continuous improvement within the team and across the wider organization.

5.Effective Decision Making: Enhanced knowledge and skills improve a leader's ability to make informed, effective decisions, which is good for teams, organisations and of course raises their own profile too.

6. Confidence and Credibility: It goes without saying that leaders who are well-educated and continuously learning are more confident and credible in their roles, gaining trust and respect from their teams and stakeholders. Opportunities open up and greater career possibilities come their way either internally or externally.

Investing in learning and development is not just beneficial for the individual leader, but also for the overall health and success of the organisation. It ensures that leaders are prepared to face challenges, seize opportunities, and lead their teams and businesses to success.

There are many ways we can develop and learn and some of this needn't be expensive as there are so many resources out there:

-Reading business books; reviewing research; reading articles; networking and sharing with peers.

-Doing Linkedin and other online courses; attending Lives and free Webinars.

-Listening to industry experts on podcasts and discussing content and new topics with others.

-Working with an Executive Coach or an industry Mentor.

-Going back to University to study specific courses and gain new qualifications.

2023 and 2024 were big learning years for me personally, where I learnt and gained qualifications for new skills and enhanced and uplevelled others and I highly recommend it. It has definitely increased my skillset and opened up new professional opportunities.
