In April 2015, the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company, an underground safe deposit facility in London's Hatton Gardens area, was burgled. The gang of thieves involved carried out months of meticulous planning and preparation. The loot was valued at £13,000,000 but believed to be much more .
The Hatton Garden company invested in high tech security equipment and a rather expensive vault. The cost of the security system in place was likely to have cost hundreds of thousands. The gang simple entered the building, cut alarm wires and began drilling through the thick concrete. After an equipment failure, the gang left empty handed only to return the following night. Between this time a security patrol was dispatched but after inspecting the building he left taking no action.
The second attempt was successful and the gang left with the contents of 300 deposit boxes. The only reason the gang were caught was the fact one of them used his own vehicle to drive to the location!
So how could a gang of career criminals enter a building, by pass advanced alarm systems, and access a reinforced vault undetected? Even returning to the scene to complete the job.
The absence of a security guard was likely to be the only preventive measure the company could have used. The benefits of having physical security should not be under estimated. More so when you compare the cost of a guard to the cost of installing easily by-passed security provisions.A human element to ay crime attracts a higher sentence on conviction and can also impact on how the offence is investigated.
