Contentment

It's been a while since I have penned my thoughts here... the past month or so reflecting on where I am in my career / life coupled with Facebook and LinkedIn updates of people in your circles of what they have done and accomplished... I pondered on the meaning contentment vs happiness... which jogged my thoughts to an interesting call with a senior hire that I was trying to convince to share his CV and gain his interest to consider a role, in which I was working on. I feel this is a noteworthy sharing...
After 2 minutes of sharing the role, his response was, may be not not now cause I am pretty happy with my current role.
Just as he was about to politely thank me for the call and reaching out to him... I paused and ask, are you happy or are your contented? He said isn't it the same, we then had a close to 10 minutes conversation on it.
I shared that they are quite different... being happy is much to do with external factors... and when the external factor are no longer there your perception of being happy will then drop in tandem.
Contentment is less reliant the external factors and nuances that you interact with. Contentment is very much innate, as being contented is a state of mind rather than being happy which is relatively different as it is a moment rather than a state.
After the 10-minutes of gaining his listening ear, I was doodling the word contentment and came up with a closer that lead to him sending his CV in for consideration.
The doodle I had, which led to him giving a serious thought and potentially sending his resume in was, the word content in contentment... I shared that just based on your LinkedIn profile, I informed him that I sense he is and has much more to offer, and grow in terms of his career. I informed him that us reaching out to him was already an achievement as the content of his well written LinkedIn profile and his blended experience at various seniority and business verticals has actually prepared him for this next role with us.
He said that he will revert to me in a week, and just before I ended the call, I casually shared that this role may not just be another job that provide you moments of happiness but this just might be the call that leads him to a contented career.
After 2 weeks of waiting his CV and well written cover letter was in my inbox for the onward sharing.
The rest is then history...
So if you happen to receive a call from a recruiter, the one thing you should then ask is how contented will I be if I were to accept this role... Cause if that has not been addressed that fat pay check envisioned may just provide you moments of happiness before you scout for a role you will be contented with.
You may just find your next career you can be contented with below...
