HOME BEFORE DARK Season One I Platform: Apple TV+ I Created By: Dana Fox & Dara Resnik
Inspired by the real life of the youngest member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Hilde Lysiak, ‘Home Before Dark’ follows the story of 8yr old Hilde Lisko (Brooklynn Prince) who aspires to be a journalist akin her father Mathew Lisko (Jim Sturgess). It is when her family moves from New York to a small lakeside town called Erie Harbor, that Hilde comes across clues related to a 31-year-old cold case. As she starts investigating this case, she realizes that everyone in the town would prefer that this case remain buried. Everyone?including her own father.??
Since the main protagonist of this crime-drama-mystery series is a fourth grader, I was honestly quite curious to know whether it was going to be treated like a gimmicky?kiddie reporter?show. One episode in and all my doubts were silenced. To my surprise ‘Home Before Dark’ did not feel like a show just for kids. Its appeal seemed universal. Upon giving it?further thought I realized that the reasons for this were pretty clear. The first being that the central plot is intricately woven with multiple dramatic tracks like intense family dynamics, turbulent friendships, confronting ghosts of the past and of course coming of age moments.?

The second and more poignant reason is that the audience is exploring the investigation?from Hilde’s?point of view. And since she believes that she is a serious journalist, all her interactions, interrogations and case related drama is dealt with seriously. Even the background score, effects, shooting style is as impactful as any adult centric crime series.?
Brooklynn Prince (playing Hilde Lisko) is the heart of Home Before Dark. Her rendition of the real Hilde whose goal in life has been to ‘bring the truth to the people’, is awe-inspiring. This show has been greatly elevated with impeccable casting by Rachel Tenner.?
Personal Note: The way we treat our children is often the way they will end up treating themselves. Hilde’s parents never blatantly dismiss her curiosity regarding things. They talk to her like an adult and treat her as one. Through the season her character does receive a lot of backlash and criticism from authorities and other people in the town who think that a child her age should focus on dolls and dresses. But her parents know better, especially her father- who sees a spark and in his own way fuels her fire.??#paramounttelevisionstudios #anonymouscontent #showreview #whattowatch?
