Content Tsunami Incoming: How Generative AI Is Going to Flood Us with Information and What We Can Do to Survive

A giant is looming on the horizon. And it’s coming fast. It’s a tidal wave of content, powered by generative AI, and it’s going to create a massive overflow of information. How will you cope with this huge content influx? How will you benefit from it? How will you filter out the good from the bad, and decide what’s relevant and what’s not? How will your brain handle the increase of already massive information processing?

TL;DR: Generative AI models are algorithms that can create new content, such as text, images, and audio. They can change how we create and consume content, but they also pose some challenges and risks. We need to be aware, responsible, and creative with generative AI models.

We live in an age of information abundance. Every day, we are exposed to a vast amount of content, from news articles, blog posts, social media posts, podcasts, videos, and more. Some of this content is useful, informative, or entertaining. Some of it is reliable, accurate, or trustworthy. But the vast majority? Not so much.

Content Overload: How Generative AI Is Going to Flood Us with Information

How do we cope with this overwhelming amount of information? How do we decide what to consume, what to ignore, what to trust, and what to question? How do we filter out the noise and focus on the signal?

These are not new questions. They have been asked and answered by many scholars, journalists, educators, and experts over the years. They have proposed various strategies and techniques to help us deal with information overload, such as:

  • Developing critical thinking skills and media literacy
  • Seeking diverse and credible sources of information
  • Evaluating the quality and relevance of information
  • Applying logic and reasoning to assess arguments and evidence
  • Being aware of our own biases and assumptions
  • Being open-minded and curious
  • Seeking feedback and dialogue

These strategies are still valid and important today. However, they may not be enough to prepare us for the next wave of information abundance that is coming our way.

This wave is driven by a new technology that is rapidly advancing and improving: generative artificial intelligence (AI).

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI describes algorithms (such as ChatGPT) that can be used to create new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos. These algorithms learn from huge datasets and user feedback, and can produce new content in the form of text, images, and audio or a combination of those.

Generative AI models are incredibly diverse. They can take in such content as images, longer text formats, emails, social media content, voice recordings, program code, and structured data.

Some examples of generative AI applications are:

  1. ChatGPT: A large language model that can generate coherent and fluent text on various topics and domains.
  2. DALL-E: An image generator that can create realistic and surreal images from text descriptions.
  3. Jukebox: A music generator that can create songs in different genres and styles.
  4. Deepfake: A video manipulation technique that can swap faces or voices of people in videos.
  5. StyleGAN: A face generator that can create realistic and diverse faces of people who do not exist.

These are just some of the examples of what generative AI can do today. There are many more applications and possibilities that are being explored and developed by researchers and developers around the world.

How We Can Cope with Content Overload

Content overload is not a new phenomenon. It has been a problem since the advent of mass media and the internet. However, generative AI models may exacerbate this problem by creating more content than ever before.

How can we cope with this problem? How can we avoid being drowned by the flood of information?

"Content overload is a serious problem that affects our attention, cognition, and well-being. We need to be selective, critical, mindful, and balanced in our information consumption." - Daniel Levitin , Author of "The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload"

There is no simple or definitive answer to this question. Different people may have different preferences and needs when it comes to information consumption. However, here are some possible suggestions that may help us cope with content overload:

  • Be selective: We cannot consume all the content that is available to us. We need to be selective about what we consume and what we ignore. We need to prioritize our information needs and goals and focus on the content that is relevant and useful for us.
  • Be critical: We cannot trust all the content that is available to us. We need to be critical about what we consume and what we believe. We need to verify the source and credibility of the content and evaluate its quality and accuracy.
  • Be mindful: We cannot process all the content that is available to us. We need to be mindful about how we consume and how we react. We need to pay attention to our emotions and thoughts and avoid being distracted or overwhelmed by the content.
  • Be balanced: We cannot rely on one type of content or one source of information. We need to be balanced about what we consume and what we diversify. We need to seek different perspectives and opinions and expose ourselves to different types of content.

These suggestions are not exhaustive or prescriptive. They are meant to provide some general guidance and inspiration for us to cope with content overload in the age of generative AI.
