Content as a point of differentiation

Content as a point of differentiation

Webflow, Notion, and Zapier as examples. What do these three SaaS companies have in common?

The answer is rather obvious at a glance, but there is more.

They all churn out massive content for both SEO and teaching their users how to use their products.

However, it's the HOW they create the content.

Let's do a quick rundown.

Webflow TV

Webflow TV

Webflow TV was launched in December 201 to host original productions as well as a highly curated collection of inspiring stories about creativity, no-code, design, and entrepreneurship.

Consider, how many hours you spend a week or month streaming either on Netflix, Hulu, etc. Webflow TV radically differentiated itself from the completion like Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or Weebly which upload its video content on YouTube by launching a TV show.

Additionally, Webflow partnered with creative designers and content creators from The Futur, Mizko, and others to stream diversified content.

Notion's Template Gallery

Notion Templates

Word in the streets says it's the creator economy.

Notion emerged as a worthy competitor in a crowded market. How they continue beating incumbents like Evernote, ClickUp, Monday.com and many others still baffle me.

The answer is in the Notion community they have fostered over the years. Using template content as a differentiation factor is a great MOAT.

Additionally, from the screenshot above, they promote creators' templates which incentives them to use Notion more and get paid to show others by selling the templates.

Zapier University

Zapier University

The first time I used Zapier to integrate apps, I was a little intimated. Keep in mind, have got some technical background but still...

Like many online courses, Zapier University has guides from Beginner to Advanced levels when using the automation software.

For technical SaaS like Zapier, it's more critical to ' show, don't tell ' and the university presents their product documentation better.

What we learn

  • How you present your content has everything to do with how your users want to consume the content.
  • Unless you find your content differentiation strategy, your content will be more similar to the competition over time.
  • Your brand strategy must be woven into the content to stick.
