Content Credentials Chrome Extension Update

Content Credentials Chrome Extension Update

The latest version of our Content Credentials browser extension just hit the Chrome Store , and we are excited about this release. We wanted to share more details with you here.

Remind me why my browser needs this?

With the rise of GenAI and the resulting heightened risk of media manipulation, we need ways to help re-establish trust in the content we see online and protect the original content of creators.

This is precisely the goal of the Coalition for Provenance and Authenticity, aka #C2PA . The C2PA has been releasing Content Credentials , a set of standard technologies designed to tackle the issue of content protection by tracking the origin and history of online assets. This technology allows content creators to add provenance data to original digital assets. Think nutritional facts for digital assets.

The issue today is that to view this provenance data, we rely on the adoption of the C2PA standard by the platforms we use. While adoption is increasing (e.g., LinkedIn and TikTok announced support recently), many platforms still do not support Content Credentials. For assets on these platforms, content consumers can proactively validate manifests by uploading C2PA-enabled assets to verification sites such as contentcredentials.org/verify .

This is where our extension helps: it brings C2PA content provenance validation and display right to your browser.

What's new in v0.0.4?

  • Performance enhancements - about 5 times faster than before!
  • Now with experimental support for MP4 - verify & display provenance information for video content.
  • Bug fixes: resolved a significant issue where some signatures (ES256) were mistakenly flagged as invalid (like the ones coming from C2PA capable Leica Camera AG or Truepic software)

What's next?

While C2PA support is increasing at fast pace, one of the biggest issues for C2PA remains the fact that content credentials get removed by most common workflows (e.g., editing an asset, posting on social media, etc.). As discussed before, this is where Digital Watermarks can help . Digital Watermarks create a more robust link between the assets and their content credentials because they are embedded inside the visible part of the assets rather than attached as metadata.

With the C2PA we have been busy standardizing the use of Digital Watermarks to recover manifests and while this is still work in progress at Digimarc we have started implementing watermarked based recovery into the extension. Here is a sneak peek at what it looks like when the extension recovers content credentials by detecting a Digimarc Validate watermark .

X strips C2PA manifests off but thanks to digital watermarks they can be recovered by the extension.
