There are a lot of voices saying that #ChatGPT (and other #GenerativeAI tools) is a straight path to mediocrity. Indeed, ChatGPT and the likes allow for the mass creation of content that we currently consider medium quality (whatever we mean by quality here). Is this such a bad thing?
- ChatGPT opens the floor to those who would otherwise refrain from creating content, having previously thought: “My skills are not good enough for this.” The already low barrier to entry has essentially disappeared.
- New content that we would currently think of as low quality has the chance to get closer to the average. As a result, the volume of average-quality content will grow exponentially.?
- As the level of language quality of ChatGPT-powered content gets evened out, machine translation (#NMT) engines will have an even simpler job. On-demand MT will be in demand.
- We can expect lots of repetitive content (even more than now), blurted out by ChatGPT and its clones. Search engines will have a tough time ranking them.
- The average becomes the new norm, and mass content creators will look for ways beyond #LLMs to differentiate their content. Human and AI copyeditors will become great assets.
- Those who have already been (pre-ChatGPT) creating high-quality content will keep doing so, now with a new toy in their already tried-and-tested toolbox. The human realm of high-quality and high-impact content remains largely unaffected.
The quality bar has been raised, but the runway is open for eveyone. We as content consumers have a lot to gain, lest we get bogged down in the reeds of average. Makes me wonder if there is an #AI to prevent that...

1 年Great insights! Remember the brilliant Hugh Laurie as House MD? #GenAI – for now at least – does not seem to be an equivalent of the extraordinary doc, but it surely can serve as a team of sidekicks, toys in his office and the ball he used to bounce off the wall. In other words, creative stimulation and data manipulation in content-related jobs. Also, the SISO rule seem to apply to LLM-aided tasks :)

1 年I loved the note about the post not being AI generated. Do you think this is gonna be a thing in the future? Similar to handmade vs machine made?

1 年Agreed - high-quality texts have been, are and will remain in demand, no matter how many people or machines join the race. Originality and creativity are still human assets ??
