Lecturer from the Stars? Lecture unveiling the Space Era at Yonsei University
The global space company, CONTEC, CEO Dr. Sunghee Lee gave a special lecture on “The Current Status and Prospects of the Private Space Industry and its Social Value”. This lecture is part of the College of Convergence Social Sciences' special lecture series and provides an important opportunity to invite experts from various fields to share their knowledge and experiences.
Yonsei University is a highly reputable institution in Korea since its establishment in 1885. Yonsei University has proposed a new vision, <VISION YONSEI 150>, to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2035. The university’s goal is to nurture an “innovative leader with a community spirit” centered on the values of challenge, leadership, creativity, innovation, coexisting and dedication.

CEO Dr. Sunghee Lee’s Vision for Strategies in the Development of National Space Defense Capabilities

On Tuesday, November 28th, a special event for diplomatic officials was held at Taeguk Hall. This event brought together various diplomats stationed at embassies in Korea for the purpose of fostering peace and promoting international security cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and around the world.
The event included a briefing on defense policy and KADEX 2024. It commenced with a welcome speech by Hwang Dong-jun, Chairman of the Korea Association for Defense and Diplomacy, followed by a greeting from Army Association Chairman Kwon Oh-seong (Army Reserves Captain), and a presentation on current defense policy issues by the Director of the International Policy Division of the Ministry of National Defense.
Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, delivered a keynote speech on the “New Space Era and Strategies for the Development of Space Defense.” Dr. Lee made a lasting impression on attendees through his presentation on the strategic integration of defense and space technology and the potential development of future-oriented defense technology.
KADEX 2024 is positioned as a platform to promote K-defense centered around the Army, present the Army’s vision, and restore the values generated from KADEX to the Army. This platform has been officially approved to be sponsored by the Ministry of National Defense. The Army Association, which has been hosting ground weapon defense exhibitions for the past 10 years, coined the new platform name ‘KADEX 2024’ from 2024, aligning with the global recognition of K-Defense. This announcement was made last week on November 22nd by the Republic of Korea Army Association.
AEROSPACE International Conference
The AEROSPACE International Conference 2023 took place at the Gyeongsang National University Convention Center from November 2nd to 3rd, effectively fostering the aerospace industry and promoting collaboration among national industries. The conference aims to establish a cooperation platform among industry, academia, research institutes, government, and the military to ensure the sustainability of the “K-Defense” industry.
At the event, Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, delivered a keynote speech titled “Strengthening the National Space Industry Competitiveness and Development Strategies in the New Space Era”. He explored topics related to the development of Korea’s aerospace industry, aiming to position it as an aerospace powerhouse. His presentation garnered significant attention from attendees offering a glimpse into the future outlook of the industry.

Space Hiring Day is scheduled to take place at Daejeon Lotte City Hotel (Grand Ballroom Hall) on January 4th, 2024. The event kickoff with a seminar titled “My Future with Space” by Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, followed by presentations on recruitment ?and welfare systems, 1:1 interviews with mentors, and a networking event.

International Space Summit 2024.
The 2nd “International Space Summit 2024” is scheduled to take place in Seoul during the summer of 2024. This global space conference serves as a platform for professionals and experts from diverse fields, including the space industry, scholars, professionals, and government officials worldwide. The primary focus is on discussing innovation and the future development of the space sector.
The event will unfold in Seoul, a city rich in history and technology hubs, over a span of three days from June 11th to 13th. It aims to enhance global networking through various special events, such as technical sessions, panel discussions, networking events, and exhibitions. These activities offer opportunities for collaboration and contribution the advancement of space exploration. Furthermore, the conference is anticipated to provide a unique opportunity for space related organizations and companies to share innovative ideas and foster collaboration through robust partnerships and sponsorships. “INTERNATIONAL SPACE SUMMIT 2024” extends an invitation to space experts capable of contributing to the development and innovation of the global space industry.

KOREA-US Space Forum
On November 7th, the KOREA-US Space Forum took place at the Hyatt hotel. Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, unveiled plans to establish a space ecosystem through collaboration with various Korean space startups. This forum marked the 70th anniversary of the alliance between Korea and the United States, providing a platform for discussions on the future directions of space diplomacy, security, exploration, and commercial cooperation.
Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, outlined plans to expand CONTEC’s space ground station network, introducing proposals to set up ground stations in Australia, Jeju Island, and New Mexico, USA. These ground stations will play a pivotal role in receiving satellite data and offering satellite image pre-processing services and application solutions. Additionally, CONTEC revealed plans to launch 3 in-house developed cube satellites within the next five years, initiating the provision of high-resolution image services. CEO, Dr. Lee, underscored the importance of collaboration with other korean space startups, highlighting plans to build a space ecosystem by partnering with companies like NaraSpace and Innospace. He particularly emphasized the significance of such collaboration, citing incubator centers for space startups in the United States and Europe as examples.
The event, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on November 7th, attracted participation from more than 15 government agencies from both countries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affars, the Air Force, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, and the Korea Astronomy and Space and Science Institute. Notable U.S. participants included the Department of State, the White House, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Indo-Pacific Space Force, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Furthermore, on November 6th, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jin Park , in his opening speech stated, “The horizons of the alliance have gradually expanded over the past 70 years since the ROK-US Mutual Defense Treaty was signed.” He emphasized, “our comprehensive efforts are not limited to the Korean Peninsula and East Asia but all encompass the inter-ethnic region and space.“
A New Space Era is approaching!
The ‘2023 Korea Space Forum (KSF)’ took place at the Mayfield Hotel in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, last November, focusing on the theme of cooperation and business opportunities in the space industry to revitalize international space cooperation.

Dr. Sunghee Lee, CEO of CONTEC, served as a keynote speaker and delivered technical details and market trends related to satellite imagery and various application fields under the tops of “CONTEC Space Studio’s Business Platforms in Space Image Utilization”.

Cooperation Agreement with Hannam University

On November 30th, Hannam University hosted the “3rd H-BRIDGE New Space Forum” at Seouipil Hall, located in the 54th Anniversary Memorial Hall. The event served as a platform to cultivate exceptional talent within the space industry and share the latest trends in the local space sector. CONTEC and Hannam University formalized a business agreement to collaborate on a project aimed at supporting creative and interdisciplinary engineering talent. Both entities are committed to working together to nurture talent that will contribute to the growth of the local industry.
An official from Hannam University underscored the significance of the forum, highlighting its role in facilitating the exchange of knowledge and technology crucial for future talent in the space industry. Furthermore, they emphasized the forum’s potential to spur the development of local industries. The official expressed anticipation for the positive impact that efforts to cultivate talent in the space industry would have on the surrounding community.
In a parallel initiative, CONTEC is set to host ?a “Space Hiring Day” event next year on January 4th, dedicated to identifying and openly recruiting outstanding talents in the space field. As outline in the business agreement, CONTEC remains committed to ongoing endeavors in nurturing talent led by the local industry. Collaborative Growth in the Space Industry: Daejeon and CONTEC Uniting Forces
“Daejeon City Hosts Meeting with Representatives of High-Performance Companies in Four Major Strategic Industries”
On November 27th, Daejeon City hosted a meeting and luncheon with representatives from companies that have demonstrated outstanding performance in the city’s 4 major strategic industries: nano semiconductors, bio-health, aerospace, and defense.
The meeting included Jaebong An, Vice President of CONTEC, a space startup that recently gained attention after being listed on KOSDAQ. During the meeting, he discussed the company’s current status, collaboration with local universities, and plans for job creation.
In particular, Vice President Jaebong An highlighted the development direction of Korea’s space industry and the participation of local governments in competitive satellite development projects during the luncheon. He suggested to Daejeon City to consider launching its own satellite.
In response, the mayor of Daejeon mentioned “This is the same report I received from the director in charge this morning”. He added, “We plan to provide support to space companies located in Daejeon as part of next year’s business plan”.
At the event, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo said, "I am very happy to meet representatives of companies that have achieved excellent results in Daejeon's four strategic industries," and promised, "We will spare no effort in providing various support to help more excellent companies grow in the future."
