While many would like to believe that the terms cloud computing has maxed out on the hype it had created over the last few years its best to think again. Advancements in virtualization technologies, increase in the options for cloud connectivity & overall changes in long-term it policy for cloud adoption is only going to make this topic boomerang into a classic explosion even locally here in Sri Lanka.
One of the topics garnering steam in the recent has been the container and serverless technologies. While for many enterprises still application containers are viewed as just a Dev platform.
Research claims this market will grow from $762m in 2016 to $2.7bn by 2020.
Main reasons for this will be that containers offer you the capability to "go big" if you choose to while having full control over your system as well as the power to test, debug & monitor. Meanwhile serverless does not mean the lack of servers but more so that the service providers takes care of all the it on the server side and you are free to just write code and deploy without ever bothering of the infrastructure and its an inexpensive and low on maintenance but above all it is simple.
The other large shift we are bound to see with the advent of dedicated wan connectivity which is the continuous dedicated connectivity to public clouds. With choices of legacy T1 to broadband to the metro based ethernets found in some countries as well as MPLS and dark fiber as connectivity options the problems of throughput & latency seen by many it administrators who used internet as the primary connectivity to public will go away.
Gartner says global it spending to reach $3.7 trillion this year
This charge is going to be led by IaaS (infrastructure as a service), IpaaS (integrated platform as a service) as well as CpaaS (communication platform as a service). Meaning overall of this it spends going to be led by the cloud.
Unlike in the past the pertaining first question has not been "why cloud" but "why not cloud"
It is important that while considering these points you also keep a watch out for any new disruptions that can boost the adoption of cloud. The market is changing dynamically and more so your options and it is paramount you engage in your cloud agent today.
